DEVON League officials have given colleague Phil Bees a helping hand towards his fund-raising efforts for Diabetes UK.

Bees, the competition's fixture secretary, is being sponsored to take part in the Great North Run today.

Four-year-old Paige, Phil's granddaughter, has diabetes and requires five insulin injections and four blood tests daily.

Phil's fund-raising efforts have been boosted by a £100 donation from the league.

A giant cheque was handed over to Phil by league chairman Stuart Munday to speed him on his way.

Anyone that would like to sponsor Phil can do so electronically by going to his Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/Phil-Bees or can make contact with him on either 07425 154289 or at phil.bees@sky.com.

A DEVON League XI defeated Cornwood by 34 runs in a twenty20 challenge match to mark the Oak Park outfit's diamond jubilee.

Plymouth's Rob Bennett top scored for the League XI with 44 off 38 balls in a total of 131 all out.

Opener Luke Bess made 20 and Ollie Mulbery had a quick 18 at second wicket down.

Matt Butterworth's three for 22 was the best of the bowling for Cornwood.

The Corns were well placed after 10 overs at 51 for four - Matt Skeemer making 22 - but slowed up against the spin of Jamie Stephens (1-24) and John Kerridge (2-19).

Although home skipper Jason Hall made 33, more tight bowling from Jack Dart (3-14) kept the Corns to 97 for nine in the time allowed.
