Brockman Cup round two

TUESDAY, JUNE 5

OLD warhorses Mark Ashworth and Liam Talbot steered Paignton to a seven-wicket win over Cockington and into the semi-finals of the Brockman Cup.

Will Wyatt 53 and John Mather (37) were Cockington's principle scorers in their total of 131 for nine.

Paignton's innings was held up for 10 minutes due to problems with the light as the sun was setting behind the old manor house at Cockington.

The break didn't do Paignton any harm though as Talbot (55) and Ashworth (31) saw Paignton home with seven balls to spare.

   Cockington 131-9 (W Wyatt 53, J Mather 37; A Smith 3-13, P Smith 2-15), Paignton 132-3 (L Talbot 55, M Ashworth 31; T King 1-24). Paignton won by 7 wkts.

BRIXHAM proved too strong for Stokeinteignhead and motored into the semi-finals with a comfortable six-wicket win.
The Villagers were all out for a disappointing score of 44 in the 14th of their 20 overs - eight batsmen departing bowled.
Paul Heath was a bit too foxy for Stoke - he claimed five wickets for two runs - while Lee Upham bagged three for 12.
Brixham had the game wrapped up inside nine overs with Richard Ward making 12 of the runs needed for victory. Stoke generously gave away 18 extras.
Stoke's Tom Hawkins must have felt he was playing Brixham on his own at times as he took two for 16 to add to his top score earlier or 16.

ABBOTSKERSWELL scraped into the semi-finals of the Brockman Cup by the skin of their teeth with a one-run win over Ipplepen.

Haydn Crocker top scored with 63, and Sean Green chipped in with 39 not out, as Abbots posted a respectable 131 for two in their 20 overs.

Matt Quartley went one better than his 39 against South Devon in the previous round with 40 as the Pens shot off in hot pursuit.

Dave Alsop (26) and Simon Curling (14) kept whittling away at the target, but wickets were falling too as at the end of the 20 overs Pens were nine down with 130 on the board.

Kingskerswell, last season's beaten finalists, are through by default as Chelston conceded the game.

The semi-final draw will be made next Tuesday night following the match between Cockington and Paignton.
