SUNDAY, JULY 22

CORNWOOD are through to the last-four of the Devon KO Cup, and a date with arch rivals Plympton, after knocking Plymouth out in the quarter-finals.

Plymouth were bowled out for 168 in the 39 th of their 40 overs with Cornwood's Dave Petherbridge taking for four 41 to help send the Peverell Park side to their first defeat in league or cup this season.

Former Plymouth duo Duncan Boase and Dave Tall led Cornwood to a three-wicket win with 51 and 47 not out respectively.

Plymouth struggled at the start against Andy Bees, whose eight overs included six maidens and only cost four runs, and were 32 for four when Mark Thompson (17) and James Nicholls (38) came together.

Nicholls and Thompson put on 56 for the fifth wicket – Petherbridge broke the stand when he bowled Thompson – but the momentum was kept up by Luke Minnet (26) and Craig White (41).

Wickets tumbled in the slog at the end though with the last three going down without a run added.

Cornwood's start was patchy with Plymouth seamer Dave Burke (3-38) keeping it tidy.

The turning point was a stand of 52 for the fifth wicket between opener Boase, another Plymouth old boy, and Scott Mansfield that got the Corns up and running after they had been 50 for four.

Mansfield went for 20 then Thompson bowled Boase as Cornwood dipped to 103 for six.

Tall came in when Boase departed and batted through to the end to give Cornwood victory with four overs to spare.

Cornwood will have home advantage in the semi-final, which is scheduled for August 12, which could cause a problem or two.

For August 12 is the same day that Cornwood are hosting the Corinthian Cup semi-finals, when both pitches on the ground are required for the semi-finals in the morning and the final in the afternoon.

Devon League officials are aware of the clash of fixtures and are due to discuss possible solutions at a management meeting on Monday (July 23)..

The other semi-final is between Bovey Tracey and Exeter.

   Plymouth 168 (C White 41, L Minnet 26, J Nicholls 38; D Petherbridge 4-41), Cornwood 170-7 (D Boase 51, D Tall 47, S Mansfield 20; D Burke 3-38). Cornwood bt Plymouth by 3 wkts.
