2002 Cup Final

SKIPPER Neil Hancock blasted an unbeaten 85 as Sidmouth cruised to a seven-wicket win over Abbotskerswell in the final of the Beer Seller Devon Cup at Plympton.

Abbots were all out for 147 in the 39th of their 40 overs — former Devon left-hander Rick Twose scoring 48 — and Sidmouth knocked off the runs with more than eight overs to spare.

Hancock, who earlier took three for 13 from his eight overs, then shared an 84-run stand with Lundi Xhongo (33) that took Sidmouth to within touching distance of victory.

Abbots, looking to bounce back from the defeat at North Devon on Saturday which knocked them off the top of the A Division, got the start they didn't want when their Western Province A batsman Warren Wyngard was bowled by Xhongo for five.

Skipper Terry Farkins, another potential dangerman, was out for a single-figure score when he was pouched by Jack Pyne at short cover, again off the bowling of Xhongo.

Steve Scarr (28) held the middle order together then Twose and Carl Mitchell (19) took the score along to 107 for six.

After that Twose soldiered on with bits and pieces from the bottom half of the order before he was the last man out.

Abbots didn't make it easy for Sidmouth in the early stages with Farkins sending down his eight overs for a two for 22 return.

Scarr got through his eight overs for just 16 runs, but once Sidmouth saw them off the back-up bowling couldn't keep them in check.

By the time Xhongo was out the target was 13 to win, which Hancock got single handed, cracking Craig Earnshaw four three fours and a two off successive balls.

   Abbotskerswell 147 (R Twose 48, S Scarr 28; L Xhongo 4-27, N Hancock 3-13), Sidmouth 148-3 (N Hancock 85no, L Xhongo 33; T Farkins 2-22).
