Mayfair Sapphires Miss out by just One Run

The Somerset indoor champions, Bridgwater, beat the Devon winners Mayfair Sapphires by just one run in a tense regional play-off at the excellent Derriford centre. Bridgewater batted first and scored a par 89-4 in their twelve overs helped by 18 extras which included ten wides. The Bridgewater openers, Sunday captain, Stuart Butt and Adrian Holbeam put on an excellent opening partnership before Holbeam had to retire with 27 runs to his name. Mayfair took their first wicket in the seventh over with the score on 50 when captain Seb Jordan took a catch off Mark Woodward to remove Josh Vickery for 4. Four runs later they took their second when the Woodward brothers combined to send Alistair Hewson back to the balcony for 2. This was a key spell for the home side as they reduced the Somerset champions to 66-4 by the start of the penultimate over. Stuart Butt was caught behind by Williams off Paul Woodward and Stuart Stranderwick after being dropped behind was run out. The returning Holbeam swung the game back in favour of the visitors as 23 runs were scored off the last two overs and he finished undefeated on 41. Mark Woodward took 2-21 and brother Paul 1-21.

Mayfair Sapphires also lost their first wicket in seventh over but had fourteen less runs on the board, Mark Woodward had been subject to a confident appeal for a stumping and was bowled off a no ball but it was third time unlucky as he was run out for a top score of 23. Eighteen more runs were added for the second wicket when brother Paul was also run out for 19. With four overs remaining Mayfair needed to score at seven and a half. Skipper Seb Jordan upped the tempo as he watched Dominic Wood caught for 6 with the score on 75. The captain was run out four runs later after a mix up and ten runs were needed off the last over if no more wickets were lost or eleven, if another fell, runs to win the game. Mayfair scored 9 as Williams was stumped by super stumper Stuart Stranderwick and Martin House was caught by Vickery off the last ball trying valiantly to get his side home. It had been a very exciting contest and the margin of one run perhaps fair as the visitors conceded seven less extras and had the man of the play off in Adrian Holbeam who took 2-25 to add to his outstanding undefeated 41. Bridgwater now take part in the Regional finals at Taunton on March 1st.

The Derriford Centre and in particular Phil Bees were wonderful hosts and the umpires Danny Daniels and Paul Dawe held their nerve in a very tight game.
