Gwent Match Report 30th May 2004 Seaton Cricket Club

"Acton Alarms Gwent Bowlers"

On an overcast day with occassional heavy showers, Devon's new captain Gareth Tidball, lost the toss and Devon were asked to bat. Against good opening bowling they lost early wickets. A composed innings by James Fletcher 17, helped by an inital partnership of 45, with Robbie Debenham 26, gradually restored order. Fletcher and Eliot Acton 45, who hit the ball powerfully then put on 48 before Fletcher was out after 77 minutes at the crease. Tom Whittle

26, who played the shot of the day and Scott Boardman 11 not out then put on 38 exciting and risky runs. Eventually the weather got the better of Devon's innings after only 37 overs and they declared to make a match of it on a score of 181-8.

After another break for the weather Devon were eager to get into the field. Nathan Probert 23 of Gwent who goes to school in Tavistock put up some resistance but Scott Boardman 5.3.3.1, broke the opening partnership by bowling Singh. Mark Orchard 3.1.8.1 and Eliot Acton 4.1.8.1 then both took wickets with new keeper Andy Buzza taking a good high running catch over his shoulder and James Parkin a superb scooped cover catch helping. Backed up by excellent fielding and TEAM spirit, vice captain Joe Webb, leg spin 7.1.14.4 and Robbie Debenham, off spin 4.1.0.13.3, then ripped through the remanider of the Gwent's batsmen with Andy Buzza completing an impressive first match by taking a sharp stumping off  Webb.
