Devon Under 14s v Gwent Under 14s                                  Newport CC Sunday 29th June 2003

"Wylie Wyman in a Spin"

Devon won their fourth match of the season in convincing style against an under strength Gwent side by 174 runs. Jamie Wyman bowling his off spin took 4-27 off 10 overs after the batsmen had laid the foundation scoring 289-8 off their 50 overs.

Openers Gary Chappell (40) and Charles Martin (43) put on 85 in 17 overs for the first wicket,

Joe Smith (60) and Danny Carroll (27) then put on 72 in 10 overs for the fourth wicket, before David Wrench (48 NO) and Iain Crombie (19 NO) batting out of position to give others a chance, put on an entertaining 41in the last 6 overs, with Wrench unable to score his 50 off the last ball having smashed 17 already off the over.

The score enabled Devon's Captain Will Murray to ring the bowling changes after Joel Seward took two wickets in consecutive balls (bowling a WIDE on his possible hat trick ball!) and give the spinners a go and backed up by the usual excellent ground fielding and catching Wyman who got drift, dip and spin tied Gwent down taking 4-27 off his 10 overs. He was very unlucky not to take "five for" a number of catches falling short and James Nicholls taking a blow to the shins at square leg and unable to catch the rebound!

Joe Smith took a smart chance at silly mid off, as well using his awareness to run a batsman out who wondered from his crease after playing straight to him. Dan Hardy took an excellent stumping off Smith's leg spin together with two catches off the pace bowlers. The match was rapped up soon after 5 O'Clock by Ollie Robinson who had earlier also gone on walk about and got stumped, before the weather had a chance to spoil things.

Thanks to Newport CC for hosting the match, the Umpires, Ted Tipper and the Gwent lads for the day. Good luck for the rest of the season.
