"Fantastic Fielding As Berkshire Bite The Dust"

Amasing fielding lead by Captain Will Murray, supporting suberb accurate bowling after lunch, in terrific heat, kept Berkshire down to 232-4, after they had an excellent start, gave Devon's batsman the chance to continue their winning ways on the first day of the Taunton ESCA Under 14s Festival. Joe Smith (77) and Charles Martin (47) then put on 129 in 27 overs for the second wicket before Danny

Carroll (34 not out) and James Nicholls finished off the match with an unbroken 45 partnership to see Devon home with 13 balls to spare.

Berkshire unbeaten this season in 10 matches, built their innings around Howell (51) before he was excellently caught by Murray off Jamie Wyman and a total of 50 extras mainly wides! Danny Carroll also starred with the ball bowling his away swing, 10 overs 1-31. The bowlers were brilliantly supported in the field by a Devon side who produced some of their best alround fielding since the Wales match- "the best at this age group the Berkshire coach had ever seen".Special mention should go to Murray and Smith who must have saved 30 runs between them. David Wrench  also bowled his 5 overs for 12 runs.

Gary Chappell and Charles Martin put on 26, before Chappell was out and then Smith came to the wicket.  His superb innings of 77 included 13 fours and 1 six in his 85 ball stay at the crease. He put on 129 with Martin, who made a patient 47 off 96 balls. Smith played the spinners particularly well using his feet and playing in the "V" either on the ground or chipping them over the top. At 155-2, Devon then suffered a small collapse, which would come back to haunt them in other matches, when they lost 5 wicktets for 33, before Danny Carroll, who played with great confidence, restored some sanity, with James Nicholls- Carroll winning the game with 3 fours in 4 deliveries.

A great start to the Festival- 16 POINTS.
