Cornwall v Devon

Report

Devon travelled to Troon to play local rivals Cornwall. After losing the toss Devon were asked to bat and a bright start by Bosomworth and Eaves was stopped in its tracks as boty fell in the space of two overs, Eaves in particular was looking in good nick until he hit a full toss straight to mid wicket and was out for 25. His innings proved to be one of the highlights of the innings as a succession of batsmen got themselves in and promptly got themselves out. Some of the dismisalls admittedly were as a consequence of good bowling but there was also some pretty ordinary batting as the middle order was blown away with no partnerships of any meaning. Osama Alam did his best to get Devon up to a reasonable total as he tried to guide the lower order through the remainder of the innings. When Jack Richardson fell for 4 Devon were all out for a disappointing 156 with twelve overs of theire allotted 50 remaining.

A disciplined and accurate start was required by the Devon bowlers to try and get Devon back in the match. This they failed to do and after 6 overs Cornwall had progressed effortlessly to 37 without loss. Skipper Matt Golding opted for spin and in a superb fightback by Devon, led by the two spinners Golding and Curtis somehow managed to get Devon back into the game. They sent down 20 overs for just 27 overs. The taking of just one wicket was to prove crucial however as despite a spirited effort by the Devon bowlers were unable to defend their total as Cornwall got home with one ball to spare. The seamers came back well, Jamie Overton picking up 2 wickets and with Merrick Steward bowling a tight spell victory was very close. Credit must go to Cornwall for keeping their heads in a tense situation as they hung on to clinch victory.

Devon must now pick themselves up and try and return to winning ways prior to a tough week at Kings.
