Hampshire won by 6 wickets.
A glorious day in rural Hampshire – Sparsholt CC took some finding, but it was worth the effort. We lost the toss (again!) and were inserted by the opposition. Soon we were in deep trouble at 7-2, with both openers back in the pavilion, but captain Mikey Cousens played a superb undefeated innings of 77 to steady the ship and steer us towards respectability. He received good support from Rhys Davies (26), but the rest of the batsmen came and went with rather depressing regularity. Building partnerships is crucial for success, and at present we are not doing that. Running between the wickets was still tentative, and will need to be improved upon.
Hampshire seemed to have quality batsmen at the top of their order, but Jack Popham took an early wicket, caught behind. A stand of 113 then sapped our morale on a hot day.
It was not until relatively late in the proceedings that another wicket fell, to a good throw from Paul Heard. A late flurry of two more wickets was too late to have significant impact. I shall set targets next time to reduce the number of wides (35, although hardly any other extras) and encourage the bowling of maidens.
This side is gradually winching itself up to the mark. We batted quite well, for the full quota of overs, and were better in the field than last week. We must put these things into practice against Dorset.
