Devon U13 v Millfield U13
Saturday, 7th June, at Yarcombe and Stockland CC

Millfield 119- 4 in 29 overs
Put in to bat, we had an early reverse with Callum Cload bowled first ball (a "good 'un", I was later informed by the umpire!). His partner Lawrence May prospered for a while, but generally the middle order got themselves in only to play poor shots before their innings had fully taken root. We really needed a big innings to build around, but, in the context of a perhaps rather more ordinary Millfield team than in previous years, 117 was not going to be a sufficient challenge. Running between the wickets remains stodgy, and although the Yarcombe field was mostly of the 'one or a four' variety, we missed out on maybe 20 or so runnable singles.
We fell into a similar trap as in the Gwent match in the second innings. The opening stand of 52 saw us wilting in our will-power. When the breakthrough came, it was a double one, but again we were frustrated in our attack. A second flurry of wickets at the end almost sowed some panic in the Millfield batsmen, but the total was passed with 12 overs left. Far too many extras were conceded, including 14 wides. This is an aspect we need to look at in future. Fielding was generally improved from the Gwent match.
This was never going to be an easy match. Millfield are a strong side, with several county players. We missed the three players from Mount House, inexplicably refused permission to play, but we need to have reserves if we are going to be successful. We are on a learning curve here – at least we batted out our overs, and showed some tenacity late in the match. The boys will need to persevere to get their act together!
