Devon v Wales Report

Devon batted first and started steadily enough until Alex Brown was caught flicking to square leg. This was a day when partnerships never really got past the threateming stage as first Mitcham and Bess added 36 before Mitcham fell for 29 and then Bess added a further 36 with Stephenson before he himself fell for a well made 40. Debutant Chris Kelmere blasted an unbeaten 28 as Devon totalled 170, a score that at Axminster is about average.

Wales took advantage of an abysmal bowling and fielding effort by Devon in the twenty overs prior to tea. Good aggressive and positive running between wickets coupled with a total inability by the bowlers to pitch the ball up and keep it straight left Wales at 81-2 at tea. To be fair to the Devon team they got stuck in second time around and for a time looked like they may turn things around as Freddie Gabbitass bowled 10 overs taing 2-24. Unfortunately the damage was done in the session prior to tea and if a lesson was ever needed in how to concentrate and work hard from ball one then Wales gave it to Devon during this innings.
