Berkshire v Devon

at Wellington College

12th June 2005

Devon elected to bat and once again we were up against it as both openers were despatched back to the pavillion by the fourth over. The rebuilding was started by West Devon pait Henry Bennett (31) and Alex Hill (61) who added 97 for the third wicket. Once Hill was dismissed skipper Zak Bess came to the crease and together they took the score to 148 before Bess fell four runs short of a half century  as the innings closed on 189-6.

The Berkshire openers started brightly enough adding 56 in the first 11 overs before Zak Bess and mr consistent Barnaby Huxtable pegged the run rate back. Barny bowled his 8 overs for just 18 and picked up two wickets. Freddie Gabbitass bowled a decent spell of 8 overs for 31 and Ned Menheneott picked up two wickets after going for 11 in his first over. Unfortunately the bowling on the day was below par with too much short bowling and consequently even though we took eight wickets Berkshire got home in the 42nd over.

Lessons to be learnt for all, particularly setting fields and how to bowl to them.
