The Bob Whitburn Under 16 Competition News

Heathcoat beat Filleigh in the first round and the other preliminary winners were Axminster who beat Clyst Hydon. Axminster were not so fortunate when they came up against Sidmouth who sailed into the next round with a 9-wicket win over Axminster at Cloakham Lawn. Having won the toss, Axminster elected to bat and took 75 minutes to nudge their way to 90 for 8 at the end of their 20 overs. The score looked respectable after the carnage wrought by in-swinger Scott Barlow, who clean bowled four of the top five in the order and ended with figures of 4 for 4. Leg-break bowler Peter Baker picked up a couple of wickets and off-spinner Josh Bess caught and bowled Axminster's tenacious opener, who top-scored with 34. The eighth wicket fell to a run out off a bye.  In reply, Sidmouth took just 40 minutes to pass the target and claim victory. But with the scoreboard reading 0 for 1 after opener Bess went for a duck off the second ball it might not have been plain sailing. Undeterred, Simon Sobczak and skipper Matt Cooke, batting at No 3, knocked off the runs with ease, scoring mainly in boundaries to finish unbeaten on 42 and 37 respectively. With three needed to win, Cooke lofted an imperious six off the first ball of the eleventh over to end the innings on 94 for 1. Also through to the quarter finals are Chudleigh and Brixham after Exeter and Plymouth unfortunately withdrew.
