FINAL Exeter St James v Hatherleigh

The original Finals Day was Saturday 2nd September, but like most cricket in Devon that day, not a ball was bowled due to wet pitches and driving rain. By mutual agreement of both sides the Final was able to be played (still at Hatherleigh) on what turned out to be the most glorious warm and sunny day.Exeter St James won the toss and decided to bat. In the second over skipper Paul Penberthy bowled Devon man Tom Richardson and when Billy Searle claimed his first wicket next over at 11-2 Exeter St James might have wondered whether batting first was the right choice. There were no further alarms for them up to first drinks at 10 overs (34 for 2) – but the break claimed a victim in the next over as Sam Skinner was bowled by Luke Reynolds. Lewis Bosomworth went next as Luke Reynolds caught him off slow left armer Jack Cherrington to make it 47-4. A good partnership ensued past the half way overs point but when Billy Searle returned to the attack he bowled Tim Phllips and Exeter St James were 66-5. Searle wasn’t finished there as he claimed 2 more scalps before the second drinks break at which point Exeter were 81 for 7. Their tail batted particularly well and patiently however and they nudged singles and secured extras for 32 more valuable runs losing only a couple more wickets along the way. So, at tea, Exeter St James’ innings closed on 113 for 9. Billy Searle was Hatherleigh’s top bowler with 4-22 off his two short spells.Sam Stacey and Morgan Reynolds opened up for Hatherleigh and set about building a solid foundation for their side. It was quiet and chanceless progress until the 8th over when Stacey survived when he skied one off Callum Treleaven. Next over though James Tilke bowled Reynolds and at first drinks Hatherleigh were 38-1. Billy Searle went in at No.3 and it was more steady progress until the 14th over when Ben Gauntlet trapped Stacey lbw. At 54 for 2 at the halfway point Hatherleigh were just beginning to get behind the Exeter St James scoring rate and this gradually lengthened as time wore on. The 19th over was dramatic for Exeter as Tom Fowler bowled Billy Searle and incoming batsman Luke Reynolds. Suddenly it was 72-4 and St James were 80-6 at the same stage. Paul Penberthy was beginning to dominate when he was on strike.
