UNDER 17 DIVISIONS

THE first action in the U17 Strauss division saw wins for Brixham and Chudleigh over Barton and Paignton respectively.

Steve Lewis scored a useful 25 for Barton, but his fellow batsmen were unable to capitalise as the Cricketfield Road side's batting petered out at 80 for eight by the close.

Runs were also hard to come by for Brixham, although they eventually passed their target with nine balls to spare, Craig Eaves providing the steadying hand with an unbeaten 27.

Ryan Shepherd took three wickets for the Brixham cause whilst Josh Newman and Eaves shared four wickets between them.

Against Paignton, Chudleigh posted a very defendable total of 131 for three, Ed Forward (39no) and Matt Ball (35) the main run makers.

Paignton got off to a good start, Josh Fitton (32) spearheading the run chase, and at 61 for three were still realistically in the race.

Four wickets then fell for just 17 runs and the chase was over. Penney (3-11) and Jack Vittles (2-5) were the destroyers-in-chief for Chudleigh.

In the Cook Division, Ashburton gained a narrow win over neighbours Harberton, Dan Partridge scoring an unbeaten 38 with the bat and Tom Durman taking two wickets for seven runs.

UNDER 15s

STOKE Gabriel got off to a winning start in the U15 Bell division by beating Ashburton by 57 runs.

Andy Ball (45 ret) and James Harris (32no) were the backbone of a first-innings batting performance that saw the home side score 131 for two in their 20 overs.

Wickets fell regularly during the Ashburton reply, with Rob Harris and Seb Ansley claiming six between them.

Aaron Stevenson chipped in with two of his own as Ashburton were bowled out for 74.

Kingskerswell shaded a close game against Abbotskerswell, eventually winning by just nine runs.

Seb Powell scored 32 not out towards Kerswell's total of 98 for two. Despite losing both openers early on, Abbots dug in and at 61 for four looked in good shape for the win.

The lower order then collapsed however and they finished tantalisingly short with an over to spare. Matt Passmore and Charlie Hill shared four wickets for Kingskerswell.

In the Collingwood division, Torquay beat Barton by 14 runs, Mawgan Penrice top scoring with 36 for Torquay. Alex Hunt scored an unbeaten 41 as Barton set about chasing Torquay's total of 114 for three but got little support from his middle order.

Wickets fell regularly, which slowed down the scoring rate and Barton eventually ran out of time to finish the job. Phil Reddaway and Karan Purewal grabbed two wickets apiece for Torquay.

UNDER-13s

BOVEY Tracey A underlined their strong title ambitions with a maximum-points win over Paignton to get their season up and running.

The wickets were shared around as Paignton were bowled out for 79 in the 19th over, Sam Wyatt-Haines claiming three wickets and Ben Roberts, Jack Thomas and Dom Whitlock grabbing two apiece.

Jordan Burnett (22) was the only batsman who was allowed to get into double figures.

Bovey knocked off the runs inside 10 overs without loss to record an emphatic win, Wyatt-Haines retiring on 31 and Jack Thomas unbeaten on 24 at the close.

Elsewhere, Kingsbridge gained an easy victory over Torquay, winning by nine wickets.

Gareth Penrice and Phil Reddaway both scored 23 but the scoring rate was slower than was needed, Torquay posting a modest score of 77 for three. Kingsbridge, led by opener S Townsend (32ret), had no problems reaching their target with more than six overs to spare.

Stoke Gabriel also got their season off to a winning start, defeating Ipplepen by 17 runs. This was a close game, Seb Ansley scoring an unbeaten 59 towards his team's total of 100 for eight.

Jacob Chisholm scored an unbeaten 34 for Ipplepen, but their reply faltered at 59 for five, and the Pens couldn't quite keep up with the required rate.

Ansley completed another great all-round performance by taking three wickets and masterminding a run out.

In the Pietersen Division, Kingskerswell consolidated their early season leadership with a three-wicket win over Paignton.

Paignton batted first, posting a score of 75 for four, Connor Adams claiming three wickets for Kerswell.

Toby Lovell (4-6) did his best to spoil Kingskerswell's hopes, but they made it home in the 16 th over, thanks largely to Sam Hancox (22) and Callum Reed (16).

UNDER-11s

THERE are new leaders of the Under-11 Broad division as Torquay beat Paignton by six wickets to leapfrog Kingskerswell into pole position.

Batting first, Paignton posted a score of 61 for nine with only Toby Lovell (26no) getting into double figures.

Putting the brakes on the opposition batting for Torquay were Kaz Symanski (three wickets) and Neal Osborne (two). Despite losing Symanski for nought, Ben Francis (26no) provided the platform for victory, ably assisted by Osborne (11no).

It wasn't all doom and gloom for Paignton however, as they beat Dartington by 67 runs, having posted an imposing total of 126 for four.

Toby Codd and Jake Robinson both retired in the 20s, whilst Simmons and Wolf shared four wickets to reduce the opposition to 59 for eight by the close. Elsewhere there were wins for Bovey Tracey against Stoke Gabriel and Ipplepen over Kingsbridge.

Four of Bovey's batsmen retired in the mid-20s, contributing more than 100 runs between them towards the eventual total of 173 for four. Stoke were promptly skittled out for 16.

There was a bizarre set of events at Kingsbridge when they entertained Ipplepen – the visitors were put into bat, scoring 67 all out, 65 of these being extras! They then went on to win the game by one run, bowling out the South Hams side for 66, Robert Snowdon and Cameron Fogdon amongst the wickets.
