Millfield 113-4

Devon won by 11 runs

Devon took the opportunity, in this seasons pipe opener, to look at some of the regional players who had made a good impression in the Active Sport Inter District programme. At the attractive Woodbury ground the home captain Joe Webb won the toss in this reduced overs game as the visitors had been stuck on the M5. Brixham's Mark Newman (18) and North Devon's Daniel Pickard put on 54 runs for the first wicket. Pickard was the first to depart for 25 ( 62 miniutes; 59 balls). The skipper joined Orchard and the pair advanced the score to 65 before Newman departed after facing 54 balls and batting for seven minutes over the hour.Joe Webb (11), Robbie Debenham (18-22 mins; 23 balls); James Fletcher (12); Mark Orchard (15) all made useful contributions with Fletcher and Orchard putting on 30 for the fifth wicket. Despite the slow outfield the final score of 124 was some 20 runs below par. The running between the wickets, until the final overs was disappointing and the Millfield fielders were not put under sufficient pressure.

Barton's Tom Whittle (2-17 off 6) made the important breakthrough by removing an Millfield opener and their number three in his initial spell. Millfield were getting over their early shock and beginning to build up momentum as the spinners Webb and Debenham were brought into the attack and the initiative was wrestled back with Webb taking 2-21 off his six overs aided by a smart stumping from Tom Booker. The required run rate kept creeping up and with diligent fielding the pressure was kept up and Millfield were 11 runs short at the end of their allocation. A good opener but the side has room to improve in most departments for their first tilt at the new ECB National competition The sides warm down was enhanced by an aerobatic display by the Red Arrows who shared their display at Nigel Mansell's nearby birthday party with Woodbury Cricket Club.
