IOW Festival - Suffolk

Five Vital Wickets

We wake to blue sky, bright sunshine, the shorts are out and we arrive at GKN to find the stumps in the ground. For the second day our opponent's manager will umpire, we have been truly fortunate with our umpires Monty Thorns, Percy Govier and now new boy Jim Anning. We take our umpires for granted – wrong, never again as during the match a parent in shorts takes over from the Manager. James Carr invites Suffolk to bat and the prospects are excellent as the sun tan lotion is in full use. Fraser makes the initial breakthrough having Butler caught at gulley by Porter, Clark retires hurt as he, Davey and Nunn put on 53. Disconcertingly Carr is having problems with his direction and when fielding has difficulty with a ball hit over his head and at drinks advises Gibbo that the eye operated on earlier in the season is playing up. James Gibson persuades Carr to leave the field and with it ends his season – what a disappointment for this whole hearted cricketer. Vice captain Fraser dives full length at long on to remove Davey off Porter, Clark returns Allin and Yau combine to run out Dunn and Wilkinson catches the opener again off Porter – 85-4 when Wilkinson takes this time a truly stunning catch off Porter to dismiss Heathcoat. The aerials are in clear view but some dark clouds are now behind the pavilion – this is not right. In twenty minutes they offload and the square and outfield are flooded – game over. We travel back in sun shine and learn that it has not rained at Ventnor and Derbyshire the leaders are playing – they win for the second time this week but again do not pick up a bonus point. Will our five wickets be useful? The trip in the evening to the Village, great choice of film Wilko, was interesting but we were still explaining the plot to some at the annual luncheon. Now we have to win our last two.
