DEVON SENIOR CUP REPORTS 2008

QUARTER FINALS

BY CONRAD SUTCLIFFE

BOVEY Tracey’s interest in the Devon Senior Cup came to an abrupt end when they crashed out by 89 runs to Budleigh Saltert on in the quarter-finals.

Bovey might have felt they had d on e the hard bit after bowling Budleigh out for 176 with five of their 40 overs to go — Pakistani paceman Ali Pasha taking three for 29.

But a five-wicket burst from Budleigh paceman Mike Cliff put the skids under Bovey, who were all out for 87 in reply.

Budleigh’s batting was solid rather than spectacular, with Chris Horne top scorer on 43 and skipper Ian Bishop next best on 41, against on e of his former clubs.

Back-up bowling to Pasha came from Pete Bradley, Chris Bradley and Ryan Bougard with three wickets each.

Cliff (5-14) sent Bovey tumbling from 26 for two to 48 for six and that was game over.

Andy Fairbairn (21) stayed around l on g enough to top score for Bovey.

Waiting for Budleigh in the next round will be Sidmouth, who were five-wicket winners in the derby clash with Exmouth.

Also through are Sandford, who humiliated Plymouth by eight wickets. They travel to Brixham in the last four. Brixham were already through having played their semi-final against Bart on two weeks ago.

Sidmouth dropped Somerset ’s Arul Suppiah in the first over — keeper Marc Jenkins putting him down off Neil Hancock’s bowling — and the Malaysian-born all-rounder punished the lapse by smacking 83.

James Burke, playing against his former club, made 20 in Exmouth’s opening stand of 87 with Suppiah.

Richard Baggs (81no) and Chris Jelley (24no) added 67 unbroken at the end.

Sidmouth were taken to the brink of victory by opener Josh Bess, who helped himself to 111.

A partnership of 112 for the first wicket with Anth on y Griffiths (41) pointed Sidmouth in the right directi on .

Bess and James Macey (32) added 99 more for the sec on d wicket and that was pretty well that.

Trent Ovens, Matt Cooke and Louis Talay were the supporting acts who saw Sidmouth home with an over to spare.

Plymouth ’s batting fell apart at Sandford, where they collapsed from 69 for three to 144 all out, then their bowling followed suit.

Once Mark Thomps on (32) and Josh Bryant (30) had been evicted from the crease, on ly Dave Burke (31) put up much of a fight.

Douglas H on do (4-22), Trevor Anning (2-18) and Sim on Ashplant (2-21) ran through the order.

Losing by eight wickets was bad enough for Plymouth — losing inside 15 overs was even worse.

Sandford captain Richard Foan smashed 57 off 35 balls, David Lye made 38 not out off 16 balls and Marc Betts was 26 not out at the early end.

Burke (1-48 off 5) and Thomps on (1-22 off 2) claimed the Sandford wickets to fall.

BRIXHAM are through to the last four of the Dev on Cup for the first time in their history after a 40-run win over Bart on .

Brixham totalled 173 for nine in their 40 overs with skipper Andy Pugh compiling 50 against the club he used to captain.

After Chris Sleep had g on e cheaply for five, Pugh and Chris Lany on put on 113 for the sec on d wicket.

Lany on was finally out for 49, having hit five boundaries.

Pugh's dismissal by Dam on Calland sparked a collapse from 119 for two to 142 for nine with Jack Porter (4-14) and Aqeel Ahmed (2-32) doing the damage.

Brixham finished with a flourish as Pakistani pro Farooq Iqbal took Adam Parker (19) and Faisalabad team mate Aqeel (12) to task in the final two overs by scoring 31 of his 40 not out.

Bart on were all out for 133 with two overs to go - d on e to a turn by the slow left-arm spin of James Fletcher.

Bart on were well placed at 43 for two after 17 overs, Nick Watkin just out for 22, on ly for Fletcher to change the game.

Fletcher (4-25) claimed the wickets of James Toms (17), Tom Whittle, Adam Parker and Aqeel Ahmed (18) as Bart on slipped to 105 for six with nine overs to go.

Farooq (2-15) and Pugh (2-18) did the rest leaving Calland stranded on 22 not out.
