PLYMOUTH were left to reflect on their wayward bowling after dipping to a 39-run defeat against holders Paignton in the Devon Senior Cup first-round tie at Queens Park.

Suman Das and Mark Lomas had three wickets each as the Premier Division side were shot out for 142 by their B Division counterparts.

But Plymouth were always going to struggle after slumping to 30 for four in reply – England Deaf XI seamer Stephen George doing the damage with a two-wicket burst – and did well to reach 103 all out.

A stand of 42 for the fifth wicket between James Nicholls (25) and Bobby Luscombe (32) saved Plymouth from total collapse. But the introduction of former Devon medium pacer Tim Ward put paid to their fun.

Ward soon knocked over Luscombe, added Nicholls at 90 for six and went on to take four for 31 as Plymouth rolled lost their last five wickets for just 14 runs.

George came back for one more over to take two for one and finish with figures of four for 11.

How different it could have been had Paignton not been given 39 runs in wides by off-target Plymouth bowlers.

Earlier, Paignton raced away to 54 without loss in the first 10 overs, at which point Al Stewart nipped out Hancock for 32, not that Paignton's run rate slowed appreciably.

Richard Cooper (24) steered Paignton towards 104 for three at the 20-over mark and only then did Plymouth exert some control with the ball.

Lomas picked up two wickets in quick succession, including dangerman Ward for a third-ball duck, and Suman Das (3-12) joined in as well.

Also through to round two are Barton, who sidestepped a potential banana skin at Abbotskerswell to win by 70 runs.
