CricketForce Success at Countess Wear

Chairman Bob Adams behind the Countess Wear BBQ

On a gloriously sunny day, 20 volunteers from Countess Wear CC arrived at Winslade Park for a day of ground work and pavilion maintenance as part of the national initiative NatWest CricketForce.

A task list of 25 jobs had been drawn up, ranging from painting, weeding, and woodwork as well as preparing the lunchtime barbecue!

Notable achievements on the day were the repair and erecting of the mobile nets; replacing broken laths on the catching cradle; repairing a newly-acquired picnic table; painting the scoreboard; maintenance of sightscreens; relaying a temporary Astroturf pitch; tree/bush and shrub pruning; and many, many more successful jobs in and around the square and pavilion.

The club were grateful to 2nd team wicket-keeper, Steve Channing (a local carpenter), for his professional touch and free materials.

The secretary, Mike Fernbank, had purchased reduced price materials (replacement laths) from Huck Nets and used his personal discount card for the paint from B&Q. At the end of the day, over 100 volunteer hours were registered, costed at over £1,500 of in-kind contribution.

The CricketForce day was twinned with an open day and registration for the U10 colts side who will be playing in the East Devon League this year.

A very promising start to the summer. Volunteers, players, wives and colts were treated to a free barbecue and each received the CricketForce t-shirt sponsored by NatWest and the ECB.
