NORTH DEVON HOLIDAY HOMES LEAGUE WEEK FIVE – MAY 10

TABLES

   DIVISION ONE

THERE was just the one top-flight game played in week five, that being the Victoria Park meeting with Heathcoat and what a contest it produced with the Mid-Devon side winning by just two runs.

Skipper Pete Randerson (69), Chris Parkes (67), Quazim Adams (58) and Matt Parkes (38) all made timely contributions for the visitors to post a healthy total of 263-5, but Colin Bettis (72) and Neil Bettis (58) made sure that the reply was always with the clock.

When the final over arrived the home side still needed 27 to win, but they made it all the way down to the final delivery which needed a six to force victory but could only manage a four and so the men from Knightshayes celebrated a thrilling win

DIVISION TWO

BRAUNTON were inactive and they no longer sit top after Morebath began their new life at the higher level with a stunning win at home to Barnstaple & Pilton.

Batting first the Mid Devon side scored 256 with Rob Venn putting bat to ball with good effect to top score with 80 whilst Steve Kelland hit 43.

The Barum reply was led by young George McEndoo who was in sight of a glorious century when he was caught on the boundary by John Chilcott off the bowling of James Miles.

Undeterred, Barum continued to chase down the required amount and, at the start of the final over, needed eight to win with half their side still to bat! Kelland's first ball was a wide but the next six deliveries were such that only six runs in total were scored and so Morebath, last year's Division Three champions, made a glorious start to life at the higher level.

James Tapp top scored with 90 and Paddy Dartnoll chipped in with 47 as Bratton Fleming chased hosts Hatherleigh's 203.

Runs from Richard Tidball (40), Ryan Davies (39), Andy Collier (31) and Richard Cockwill (26) saw the home side post a decent total. Charles Langdon and Jason Smith each claimed three wickets for the visitors who got home with six wickets and overs to spare thanks to the efforts of Tapp and Dartnoll.

Andy McMillan had a fine game for Beaford in a losing cause at home to Holsworthy. McMillan top scored with 54 as Beaford totalled 190-6.

Andrew Butler bagged a brace of wickets for the visitors who won with three wickets in hand. Leo McDonnell hit 63 and James Long 36 whilst Mark Lake (3-42) and that chap McMillan (2-42) were the pick of the home bowlers.

None of the morning's top four in the Third Division were in action and so the attention was very much on the foot of the fledgling table.

   DIVISION THREE

THE only sides in action in Division Three were those occupying the bottom four berths on Sunday morning with the biggest movers being Sandford II, who chalked up a third successive victory beating visiting Westleigh by 33 runs.

Russell Discombe (48) and Simon Ashplant (29) saw the hosts to a fine start with 82 for the first wicket. Later runs came from Chris Theedom (29) allowing the home side to reach 171 when they lost their final wicket.

The prized wicket of Westleigh's James Ford was claimed by Steve Morish who was making a rare, but much appreciated appearance for the Creedy Park men. Simon Poyner hit 60 and Richard Pearson got 24, but once they were both back in the pavilion any victory thoughts evaporated. Morish finished with splendid figures of 3-10 from 7.2 overs whilst young Ashplant took 3-28.

The father-and-son combination of Brian and Steven Ayre provided the top two scores for Bratton Fleming in their 70-run home defeat at the hands of Ilfracombe.

The visitors were indebted to an unbeaten 55 from James Sutton and 38 from Nick Kavanagh as they made 213-6. Patrick Crane took 2-58 for the home side who were then bowled out for 143. Brian Ayre hit 27 and son Steven hit 33, John Newman took 4-21 for Ilfracombe.

DIVISION FOUR

WEARE Giffard made a winning start to their campaign with a 79-run victory at Bideford, where they scored 281-3 and then bowled the hosts out for 202.

The star performance of the game came from Weare Giffard batsman Mike Heddon, who hit a chanceless 175. Martin Beer gave good support with 61 whilst Andy Webbe claimed two of the four wickets to fall.

Webbe then hit a defiant half-century in the reply, but only youngster Josh King (31) could stick around for too long as Beer took 3-14 and James Maine claimed 2-43.

Mark Cowling took 5-26 as Newton Tracey II beat Lynton & Lynmouth II by 110 runs. Andy Chatham (83), Paul Bitmead (35) and John Wormsley (33) helped lead the home side to 230-6 and then, thanks to that Cowling ‘fivefer' the visitors were bowled out for 120.

There was a magnificent innings from Gregg Maher at Halberton where the Aussie registered the first century of his career plundering an unbeaten 153 off the visiting Kelseymen attack as his new side won for the first time this term, successfully chasing down 263-7 to win with four overs, and eight wickets, in hand.

Simon Tolley top scored for Kelseymen, but this was the Maher show and such was his dominance of the reply that , apart from a whopping 56 extras, the next best with the bat for the home side was skipper Dab Coles with 21 and Hugh Sheridan chipped in with 19.

DIVISION FIVE

THERE was a full programme in Division Five with new boys Petrockstowe winning for the first time with a four -icket success at Heathcoat II where they bundled the Knightshayes men out for 91 and then lost six wickets before making it over the winning line.

Tom Marsh (56) and Ben Mogford (42), were the principle run getters for Filleigh III at Bude ,where they posted a total of 208-7. Home skipper Mike Taylor took 3-22 in nine overs and Steve Coles claimed 2-41.

Bude then charged to victory at 210-6 led by Sam Hocking with 77 and his Father, Alan, was also in good touch with an unbeaten 43. Glyn Bickle made a timely 28 to help the cause whilst James Popplewell took 3-23 for the visitors.

It was all over long before 5pm at Bishops Nympton where the home side were hustled out in 27 overs for just 69. John Verney top scored with 18, Paul Strong led the bowling with 4-16 in nine, Henry Dunn (2-23), Charlie Down and James Tapp took the wickets for North Molton who lost four wickets in a successful run chase led by Tapp with 36.

Simon Pimm top scored with 76 for Barnstaple & Pilton III as they made 225-5 at home to Nomansland.

Liam Murtagh (32), Martin Ash (36) and David Beer (26) also made contributions whilst McGovern was the pick of the Mid Devon side's bowlers with 2-34. Andy Crossman hit 40 in the reply that floundered on 186, wickets here for Chris Newton (3-27) and Dave Orr (3-43).
