North v East at West Buckland School Sunday May 8th

North and East finally kicked off their campaign at a bright and breezy West Buckland School. Jamie Overton (N captain) won the toss and dutifully put East in to bat. The East innings started badly with Jack Richardson clean bowled by Overton's 4th ball. Alec Bosomworth and Matt Golding (E captain) steadied the ship with a partnership of 16 in 6 overs before left-armer Sam Bhaumick bowled Bosomworth and Harrison Folland with successive deliveries in the 8th over. Worse followed when in the next over Tom Ansell deceived C Watson with a slower delivery and was caught and bowled. East were reeling at 19 for 4.

Golding and Merrick Steward moved the score along to 34 with the help of some erratic bowling, before Steward departed bowled by 'livewire' Max Curtis for 4. New bat George Biggs followed shortly after bowled by Ansell just before the drinks break, leaving them 35-6 after 15 overs. Overton decided to go for the kill and re-introduced himself into the attack with devastating effect. His first over saw a procession of batsmen come and go; N Masefield, D Penberthy and G Chaplin were all bowled by express pace deliveries. The next over saw Curtis bowl M Beer to leave East on 40-10. Golding and last man Alex Thurgate managed to steer them past 50 and gain a batting point before Overton bowled Thurgate to leave the innings at 51. 8 ducks, 10 batsmen bowled and 27 extras, with only Golding standing firm on 8 not out.

North set off in pursuit of victory at a controlled pace with Craig Overton and Tom Ansell putting on 40 for the first wicket inside 10 overs. East looked to be heading for an 11-wicket drubbing until a risky run and excellent fielding ran out Overton for 18. The score had reached 49 when Jack Richardson produced 2 great deliveries to account for Harry Booker and Toby Lochead. However, the joy was short-lived as Ansell struck the winning runs to secure victory in only the 16th over.
