John Stevens Under11 Cup

2003

Sidmouth Retain Cup

Sidmouth retained the John Stevens Cup when they defeated Plympton by 46 runs. Plympton won the toss and invited Sidmouth to bat and a well paced opening partnership between James Toland (58) and Will Gater (42) set the tone for the day. The drinks break brought the demise of Gater the first of two excellent stumping's by John Mullins. Zak Bess started slowly but scored 28 watching his captain depart to the pavilion. In the company of Paris Pinney (25)  the score advanced and after their thirty overs Sidmouth had scored 179 with Matt Goss taking 3-15.

Perhaps the main difference between the sides was the number of boundaries and although Plympton batted well as a unit they were always behind the clock. Nathan Bulley topped scored with 22 but there were late flourishes from Ryan Skinner (18) and Dean Smith who was undefeated on 19 as the overs ran out with Plympton on 133-9.

The unfortunately unwell John Stevens would have enjoyed the game which was played in an excellent spirit. The competition was sponsored by the Devon Cricket Board who would thank all the officials and managers involved in the smooth running this year.
