Mount Wise Beat Cornish Champs but loose to Dorset Winners

Devon Representatives Mount Wise have beaten the Cornish champions but have now lost to the Dorset winners. In the earlier rounds Sidmouth powered into the second round of the Portman Cup with a ninetynine run victory over East Devon rivals Axminster. Devon under 15 all rounder Matt Cooke scored a huge record breaking undefeated 155 (12 fours; ten sixes) in helping his side reach 250-1 with opener Scott Barlow 50 not out. Axminster's number three Joel Seward scored an undefeated 55. Ipplepen scored 77 in their first round match against Ivybridge and bowled their opponents out for 59 to come out winners by 19 runs. The Ipplepen man of the match was Adam Peters and Matthew Kendrick was the pick of the Ivybridge side. Kingsbridge visited Mount Wise and lost by 62 runs. Will Murray rattled up 73 and Devon under 14 captain James Carr was unbeaten on 53. Kingsbridge were 101- 9 at the end of their twenty overs. Richard Garland took 3-29 as Carr shared the bowling around.

In the battle of Torbay Torquay came out winners over their near neighborsBarton by 22 runs. Torquay batted first and scored 103-8 thanks to 70 from Mickey Wilkinson. Barton's Tom Ellyatt took 3-8. Barton had four wickets in hand at the end of their 20 overs and reached. 81. Ellyatt completed by fine all round performance in scoring 23 the same score made by B.Hart. Wilkinson took 2-9 to confirm his standing as Torquay's man of the match. Bovey Tracey completed a 60 run home win over Paignton. The home side batted first and scored 105-1 with Patrick Hambly scoring an undefeated 31, Ashley Brooks retiring on 50. Paignton were all out for 45 in 14 overs with Layfield, Winterbottom and Dale taking two wickets a piece. Plymouth based Mount Wise trip to Torbay proved fruitful as they defeated Brixham. Karl Fothergill, captained in the absence of injured skipper James Carr, won the toss and batted. After the early loss of opener Steve Colwell, Charles Martin 50 no and Will Murray 68 no shared an unbroken second wicket stand of 137 as Mount Wise posted 146-1. Again eight bowlers were used, pick being Rory Wayne 3-13, Harry Spencer 3-15 and Richard Garland 2-0 as Brixham were bowled out for 61.   Next
