NORTH DEVON LEAGUE WEEK ONE - APRIL 11 & 12

NORTH Devon made a superb start to the new North Devon Cricket League with wins for the 3 rd and 2 nd XI's in their respective matches and it was very much a case of the Instow youth taking centre stage over a sun-kissed first weekend.

   On Saturday in their opening Division Four fixture, North Devon III beat visiting Halberton by five wickets, and with five overs to spare.

   Fourteen year old Max Curtis was one of there home bowlers to bag a brace of wickets   as he (2-26), Matt Dart (2-26) and Jack Firth (2-14) restricted the Mid-Devon side to 151-9 and then 15 year old Craig Overton struck a sweet half century, both bringing up his 50 and sealing the victory with a six over the sea wall at the Instow ground.

   Twenty-four hours later and the young guns were at it again as North Devon II opened their Division Three campaign with a seven-wicket stroll against Shebbear.

   The visitors totalled a modest 149-9 with Ollie Wickett top scoring with 25. Young Curtis picked up three more wickets with 3-10 from nine overs, 16 year old pairing Jack Ashmore and Raymond Clarke both picked up a couple of wickets and 15 year old Jamie Overton claimed 3-31.

   At 27-3 the reply had made an inauspicious start but then Ashmore and 15 year old Jamie Overton both hit unbeaten half centuries to taker their side to victory. Overton matched his brother's opening day half-century the day before with 52, Ashmore ended the game with 58 to his name.

 

BRAUNTON got their Division Two season off to a great start with an 86-run home win over Barnstaple & Pilton.

   An opening stand of 118 between James Windsor (53) and Tom Mitcham (82) was the cornerstone to a home total of 257-3 with Brady Saunders unbeaten on 74 at the close of the innings.

   The Barum reply ended on 171-9 with Mike Payne top scoring with 36, Martin Brice had the next best with 19.

   A quartet of home bowlers, Barney Huxtable, Ross Burbidge, Tom Potham and Mark Mitchell bagged two wickets each.

 

FILLEIGH III who this year are going to be fielding a side with five adults and half a dozen of the club's youngsters by way of a development side, got off to a winning start in Division Five as they beat visiting Bude II by 86 runs.

   Jaz Kalsi struck the first century of the new league season with 103 as he and Will Popplewell (60) put on 154 for the third wicket.

   The host's innings ended at 214-8, Mike Taylor taking 4-30 for the visitors who could only muster 128-9 in their innings.

   Ben Purcell led the way with 48 whilst Thomas Hall chipped in with 40. Fourteen year old Nathanial Shervington took 4-28 in nine overs, thirteen year old Sam Witheridge claimed 2-8 in as many overs whilst another 13 year old, McCauley Harrison-Hooton, kept wicket with distinction and not a single bye was conceded throughout his time behind the stumps.

   Division Two: Braunton, 257-3 (T Mitcham 82, B Saunders 74no, J Windsor 53), Barnstaple & Pilton 171-9 (M Payne 36, M Brice 19; B Huxtable 2-25, R Burbidge (2-27), T Potham 2-28, M Mitchell 2-30). Braunton (20pts) bt Barnstaple & Pilton (4) by 86 runs.

   Division Three: Shebbear 149-9 (O Wickett 26, M Bray 23; J Overton 3-31, M Curtis 3-10), North Devon   151-3 (J Overton 52no, J Ashmore 58no). North Devon II (20pts) bt Shebbear (3) by 7 wkts.

   Division Four: Halberton 151-9 (T Sambrook 45, D Coles 26; J Firth 2-14, M Curtis 2-26, M Dart 2-26), North Devon III 155-5 (C Overton 55no, R Heaman 22, M Curtis 19; D Kreuger 2-35, B Franks 2-51). North Devon III (20pts) bt Halberton (5) by 5 wkts.

   Division Five: Filleigh III 214-8 (J Kalsi 103, M Popplewell 60; M Taylor 4-30), Bude II 128-9 (B Purcell 48, T Hall 40; N Shervington 4-28, S Witheridge 2-8). Filleigh III (20pts) bt Bude II (4) by 86 runs.
