NORTH DEVON HOLIDAY HOMES LEAGUE WEEK TWO – APRIL 18 & 19

DIVISION ONE

FILLIEGH began their campaign with a 43-run at home to Heathcoat.

   Mark Prideaux led the home side's innings with 71 whilst Godfrey Tucker chipped in with 22. Andrew Birt-Mitchell took 4-43 for the Knightshayes men who were then bowled out for 174.

   Birt-Mitchell top scored with 59 and Jon Harvey also hit a half-century with a useful 52. Jamie Palmer (4-28) and John Hickman, claimed the early wickets for the home side as Heathcoat were 13-4 at one stage before mounting something of a recovery but left-arm spinner Gary Henry claimed 4-31 to help finish them off.

  Champions Sandford are off and running for the new season and in winning their opening game they also put an early dent in the aspirations of one of the sides expected to be amongst their rivals for the top crown this season, Bradninch.

   The Mid-Devon derby at Creedy Park ended in a victory stroll for the home side who restricted the visitors to 163 for nine. Joel Murphy top scored with an unbeaten 48 but there was no happy home coming for former Sandford skipper, Richard Foan who was caught by Simon Ashplant off the bowling of Pete Rowe for nine. Rowe, Ashplant and Ryan Glass each bagged braces of wickets.

   The hosts were home and dry inside just 30 overs led by South African Tianne Mostert who hit an unbeaten 79. Richard Tucker and Adrian Small chipped in with 35 and 33 respectively.

   Just as the champions got off to a winning start, so to did last season's runners-up North Devon who beat Bideford on a glorious batting track at Instow. Warren Miller (20), Dan Bowser (43), Jamie Overton (39) and Martin Gear (39) all made contributions but the star of the home effort was Stuart Rhodes who hit an unbeaten 152 in a total of 313-4.

   Bideford then proved difficult for the home bowlers to knock over and finished their reply on 172-3 led by Matt Allin with 109. Clifford Hayes and Scott Amoss took the only visiting wickets to fall as the home side claimed their opening day win by a margin of 141 runs.

    Braunton made it two wins from two starts in a game that mirrored their opening engagement the week before. Having opened up with an 86-run victory in week one they beat visiting Hatherleigh by 85 runs. Ross Burbidge struck a sweet 101, James Windsor 46 and Brady Saunders 30 in a home total of 241-6. Richard Tidball claimed 3-33 for Hatherleigh who were then bowled out for 156 with Gareth Tidball top scoring on 63. Andy Paddison took 3-16 for the home side.

DIVISION   TWO

BRAUNTON made it played three, won three with a 71-run win over visiting Filleigh II. Batting first seems to suit Braunton this early season and they rattled along to a total of 298-7 led by Australian Matt Harivel with 124.

   Barney Huxtable weighed in with 86 and Andrew Paddison hit 31. James Marsh claimed a brace of wickets for the visiting side who were then 217-6 at the close of their innings.

   Ross Denning fell seven short of a century and Rob Collier three short of a half century whilst Andrew Collier was unbeaten with 21 at the close. Harivel and Paddison both bagged a brace of wickets.

   Barnstaple & Pilton picked up their first win of the season in their second outing as they beat Holsworthy by 26 runs. Michael Paine top scored with 45, George McEndoo an unbeaten 25 and Danny Donovan hit 23 in a Barum total of 180-8.

   Darren Jenkins (3-39) and Andrew Layton (2-27) were the principle wicket takers for Holsworthy who were then bowled out for 154. Steve Drew (41), Layton (39) and John Tidball (27) were the main scorers fo9r the visitors whilst Steve Moore and George McEndoo, both returned figures of 3-21.

 

DIVISION THREE

SHEBBEAR won at Sandford II by 180 runs thanks to a whopping 191 from Martin Bray in a total of 331-5. Chris Jenn hit 62 as he and Bray added 178 for the second wicket.

   Bray was put down no fewer than seven times, four of those behind the stumps. In the home reply South African Tianne Mostert hit a 26 ball half century before being out for 62 and Simon Ashplant scored 23 as Sandford were bowled out for 151. Keith Horwell (4-39) and Simon Brock (3-24) did the damage for the visitors.

   Bude were well beaten at North Devon II where the home side sailed to 215-2 thanks to Craig Overton (87), 14 year old Max Curtis (58no) and Rob Heaman (29) and then the visiting side were bowled out for 144 with only Andrew De Rosa (57) offering much resistance. Jack Ashmore took 4-14 from his nine overs, Matt Dart (3-34) and Mike Record (2-20) also took wickets.

  Saturday just the one game in Division Three with Incorrigibles winning a low-scoring affair at Barnstaple & Pilton II.

   The home side found the going difficult and closed their innings on 113-9. Dave Loder carried his bat for the entire 45 overs and closed unbeaten on 36! Extras made up of 26 and the next best with the bat was the Henry McEndoo with 17.

   Ryan Bowden took 3-18 for Incorrigibles who scarped home on 115-8. Ed Pincombe top scored with 29 and James Hope made 22 before being bowled by 14-year-old Jack Popham who took 3-35. Matt Clark took 2-12, but the Witheridge-based visitors claimed a two-wicket victory.

DIVISION FOUR

DARREN Willcocks (32no) and Tom Farnell (19no) saw Bideford II to a single-wicket win at home to North Devon III in a compelling contest.

   Rob Anderson hit an unbeaten 87 and Scott Amoss struck 28 as the visiting side posted a healthy 207-7. Paul Argyle (3-55) and John Weeks (2-36) claimed wickets for the hosts where staring down the barrel at 171-9 before the Willcocks and Farnell partnership got them home, Willcocks winning it with a four with as many balls of the home innings reply to be bowled.

    Earlier Andy Webbe had top scored for Bideford with 60. Colin Payne, Ray Clarke, Tim Cooke and Warren Miler each took two wickets for the losing side.

 

DIVISION FIVE

BARNSTAPLE & Pilton III got their season off to a winning start with a comfortable six-wicket success at Heathcoat II where they bowled the hosts out for just 142 and knocked them off for the loss of four wickets.

   The home side's Chris Gregson top scored with 39 but the star of the first innings was Chris Newton with 4-19 whilst occasional bowler Robert Wilkins picked up 2-16 and there was a tidy nine over spell from Nigel Rowe that produced excellent figures of 1-12. Wilkins then led the run chase with an unbeaten 42 whilst Martin Ashe hit 40 and 15 year old Liam Murphy chipped in with 34.

Bradninch 163-9 (J Murphy 48no; S Ashplant 2-26, P Rowe 2-28, R Glass 2-30), Sandford 167-3 (T Mostert 79no, R Tucker 35, A Small 33). Sandford (20pts) bt Bradninch (3) by 7 wkts.

Filleigh 217 (M Prideaux 71, G Tucker 22; A Birt-Mitchell 4-43), Heathcoat 174 (A Birt-Mitchell 59, J Harvey 52; G Henry 4-31, J Palmer 4-28). Filleigh (20pts) bt Heathcoat (8) by 43 runs.

 

Division Two
