MORE than £5,000 was raised for the Devon Air Ambulance at the Tom Allin Memorial Cricket Tournament held at North Devon CC.

Bideford, North Devon and a Tom Allin XI skippered by former Tom’s former Warwickshire and Devon team-mate Chris Metters took part in the competition.

The tournament was staged in memory of Tom, who died in January this year when he fell to his death from the bridge on the A39 on the outskirts of Bideford.

Money raised at the tournament will be donated to the Devon Air Ambulance, a cause close to the hearts of the Allin family.

North Devon defeated Bideford in the first game, the Allin XI beat Bideford in the second game and went on to triumph over North Devon in the final.

Metters blasted a quick-fire 70 as the Allin side raced to victory.

The matches were followed by an evening of fund-raising in the pavilion, which included a race night, charity auction and raffle.

More than 20 lots were auctioned off and in excess of 60 items went into the grand raffle.

Pro-Direct, the Devon-based kit supplier, came up trumps with numerous lots and prizes – particularly signed sports shirts.

Barney Huxtable, the North Devon captain and friend of Tom’s, said the event exceeded all expectations.

“We haven’t finished working it all out, but we raised at least £5,500 in the evening,” said Huxtable.

“The auction hit around £2,200, the raffle was more than £1,000 and we were lucky to get a £1,500 donation from Santander Bank as part of a community scheme involving their staff.

“Adam Parker at Pro-Direct in Newton Abbot was a great help with the auction.

“The day exceeded all our expectations, even if North Devon didn’t win the competition.

“The Allin XI was full of Tom’s friends from club and county – Gary Chappell, Tim Piper, Justin Yau, Seb Benton and Andrew Buzza among others – and it was probably fitting they won it.”
