Great heart, great team spirit, great result but where is the mirror? Behind the door!

After all the rain during the week and rain over night it was fantasic to think Thorverton CC were able, Devon not having played for a month, to get the ground ready for Devon's match against Berkshire. As last year the hospitality was fantastic, tea, coffee and bacon butties on arrival, bar open, nothing too much trouble. Thank you most sincerely.

The dark clouds and light rain were not welcome but the forecast suggested it would clear away and it did. Winning the toss was critical and guess what Toby Codd lost it again! No surprise Devon are asked to bat. Play straight, don't play across the line under any circumstances and take every run possible. Coddy knocks a single off the 2nd ball through the vacant mid on area; third ball Dan Pyle times a checked drive through extra cover for 4, gosh the outfield is quick even with the lush grass and rain and 6th ball he repeats the shot. What a start! The second over the ball pops more and it is a maiden. Third over a two and after 4 overs it is 13 without loss. All goes well, with lots of playing and missing before Dan plays slightly away from his body, play within the bubble, and nicks off and is caught behind. Enter the pink one, who gets sledged about his pads and bat handle colour again but what about the mirror? At drinks after 15 overs it is 41-1, given the pitch conditions very commendable. Guess what the break does the usual and Coddy gives catching practice to the slips and in the next over a little incident. Steery pulls away just before the bowler delivers and walks away to square leg. Was there a player talking? Next ball he clips it off his legs and short mid on a takes a sharp chance. Winds of change! 43-3. Charlie shoulders arms and is LBW 51-4 in the 20th over. Hard hands to Berkshire's leggie who really rips it, sees Freddie caught at slip; then Greener relatively untroubled so far pulls a real long hop to mid wicket 80-6 in the 30th over and drinks again- it should hurt! Berkshire fight back wins that session. The game plan now to use the overs and score as many as we can whilst doing so. A small stand then follows, Jamie Telford and Jake Reddick, before Telford is LBW. On 119 in the 40th over Reddick is bowled by a slow delivery and Dan Wolf plays at the next ball, wide ball and nicks off. Dan Goodey fresh from his Palladium League 100 is then bowled and Devon are all out 121. 20-30 below par- time will tell?

After a fantastic tea again, thank you parents, it is warm up and out to field. The plan - bowl straight, just short of a length at off stump, make them play, field out of your skins, don't let them take any singles but most of all don't give up, fight all the way, to the bitter end.
Steery opens with Greener having a sore back and opens with a maiden. Dan Goodey bowls another maiden before Steery 2nd over goes for 8. Goodey bowls two more maidens and together with tight fielding Berkshire creep along to 21-0 off 10. The plan, also if things allow, it is that both Brad Causey, making his debut and Charles Fitzroy come on ealry to get them into the game. Causey's first over is on the mark and so is Fitzroys and the pressure continues. It tells in the 14th over when Fitzroy bowls Legg to take his first County wicket!  33-1 off 15 overs - drinks break. Toby Codd comes on to take even more pace off the ball and see what spin there is, and the Torquay BGS combo contain Berkshire. The introduction of Dan Wolf sees what turns out to be the game changing moment, when he bowls down the leg side and Scriven over balances and Jamie Telford whips the bails off - a brilliant stumping, great hands! 52-2 Coddy then gets one to shoot and turn and Stevenson is LBW. 2 overs later it becomes 57-4 when Coddy rattles the off stump. Wolfy then has Rawsthorn LBW 58-5 and that becomes 59-6 when Bard Causey takes a good catch having nearly taken a brilliant one at short extra at the start of Berkshire's innings. There is then a stand of 11 before another game changing moment Dan Wolf runs out Kanwar with a direct hit. It epitomised Devon's fielding and attitude which so far had been excellent. The game was just begining to drift slightly, Berkshire having 3 wickets left and needing 44 to win in 9 overs, when Steery and Goodey are brought back on. They both bowl really well but in the 40th over with the score on 89 Steer takes the first of his 3 wickets in 2 overs and Devon run out winners by 23 runs. You just cannot keep him out of the game!

We bowled straight, only one wide, our fielding was intense and of a high standard, something we had practiced over the winter, which together applied the pressure which in turn led to wickets falling and us winning. Brilliant! Don't get carried away. Enjoy it but we have to move on and improve further.
Thank you the parents for an awesome tea again; thank you the umpires; thank you Wendy; and thank you Thorverton CC for letting us play at your club. Can we come back again next year?
