Day 1 Derbyshire 23rd July Pitch 3

It was a long time ago Berkshire at Thorverton when we laid the marker down, set our standards, bowling, fielding and batting. Arriving, excited at the Taunton Festival was like starting a new season and the weather, hot, very hot and dry, it could have been a new season too!

The warm up concerned us; it was too lethargic and players did not show enough pride in their performance. We won the toss and put Derbyshire in. Greener was not fit to bowl. The 4 ball in Steery’s and the 3 wides in Goodey’s first overs set the tone and as the game developed, heat accepted, the standard of fielding disappointed. After 6 overs the score 30-0! After 10 a little fight back 42-0, due to Wolfy and Brad’s maidens. However that quickly changed and after 15 overs it was73-0. In the 16th over, Brad’s fourth over he was clipped for a 4 then 6 and next ball surprised Hibell who cut strongly to Dan Pyle at point. Relief a wicket! In the over after drinks he took a second a glove down the leg side well taken by the outstanding Jamie Telford - the little luck we needed? Coddy then introduced himself and bowled with the control missing and in his 3rd over Brodrick succumbed to the pressure and skied a catch to Greener safe hands. Charlie Fitzroy then had a smart chance taken at slip again by Greener and it was 122-4 off 24 overs. We had started to get out of jail or had we? The next wicket did not fall until the 36th over when Greener bowling his occasional off spin, took a smart return catch 159-5. Lunch was taken at 37 overs 168-5 - given how we had bowled and fielded we were reasonably happy. Quick talk they will come out looking for runs, set more defensive fields immediately, bowl straight, raise your fielding standards. Did we? In the 44th over with the score 217 Jamie stumped State off Greener 217-6. It had been a great partnership but to be frank, we gave them just too many 4 balls and wides and Derbyshire were allowed soft singles with players not anticipating, expecting in the ring- too much lunch? Guys have more pride in your performance; take it personally if someone takes a single to you! Switch on! Expect it! Steery took a wicket in the 46th over Bramwell eventually out for 65 caught Goodey. Steery then ran out Hunt with a brilliant piece of individual fielding. 227-8 but Derbyshire finished on 247 off their 50 overs. How many extras, 2 for a wide, 52 - just not good enough; a £1.00 a wide tomorrow?

The pitch was good and the outfield quick and with our batting we, if we are sensible but positive could chase this down. Things couldn’t have got off to a worse start, for Coddy or the side when he is bowled first ball and next over Pyler pushes at a delivery and is caught behind. 2-0! Steery and Greener consolidate; playing straight but in the 7th over Steery plays across a delivery and adjudged LBW. 26-3. Charlie nicks his first delivery but is dropped behind - our first bit of luck? He supports Greener but in the 16th over with the score on 81, Derbyshire wide count helping us, he charges a wide ball and is stumped!! Next over Will Thompson plays a disappointing shot and is caught in the covers off a leading edge- play straight. Freddie follows caught off an inside edge, 87-6. Jamie Telford joins Greener and they set about rebuilding Devon’s innings, doing the basics, playing straight rotating the strike and taking quick singles. The score builds and they start to be more positive until in the 37th over Jamie cuts upishly and is well caught at gulley, 148-7. Dan Goodey promoted yorks himself, 157-8. Enter under pressure Charlie FitzRoy. From the start he is calm and composed and gradually he gains in confidence; with Greener they put on 83 for the ninth wicket. At the end of the 44th over, 183-8, they assess the situation and decide to have ago. 12 needed from 12 balls! Greener is bowled for a fantastic 96 2nd ball of the last over. It will happen Greener, perhaps even this week - believe in yourself. Dan Wolf who has had to watch the partnership scored a single but unfortunately Devon finished 5 short, a pity but a losing draw.

Derbyshire 247-8. B Causey 6.2.19.2. B Green (off spin) 5.0.35.2. Devon 242-9. Green 96. Partnerships: 4th 53 Green/ Barriball. 7th 41 Green/ Telford. 9th 83 Green/ FitzRoy.

Day 2 Gloucestershire Tuesday 24th Pitch 2

Much better warm up, the players want to bat and Gloucestershire put us in. Freddie Filor to open with Coddy. A bye off the first over then 9 off the second and we are away. Freddie then “I played down the wrong line” and is bowled off stump. Steery and Coddy then put on 62 for the second wicket before Coddy is caught in the gulley 83-2 in the 24th over. Greener and Steery take it on, Steery giving the odd chance until in the 41st over he is caught behind for 74. At times both players hit the fielders rather than gaps and dropping the ball short but they had given us a platform and had started to pick the run rate up from the 35 over scoring at 5 -14 an over! Charlie B is out caught behind. Lunch comes with 6 overs to go probably at the right time for us. After lunch Greener gets his 50 and then Will Thompson and he explode! Greener is brilliantly caught and bowled for 67 and Thomo takes over clean hitting boundaries. He loses Pyler on the way but finishes on 44 not out off 22 balls and Devon finish on 265-6 off their 50 overs. Great knock. If we had taken sigles and been more positive we could or should have scored 300 - we are hard task masters!

Goodey doesn’t fancy the new ball so Brad and Pyler open and what a great decision. In his second over Brad takes two wickets, a slip catch, Greener and next ball LBW. The hat trick ball is the first ball of the next over we wait. Pyler then takes a wicket again caught in the slips, Greener, shelling peas. Gloucestershire 14-3! The hat trick ball is leg side. Hopkins and Slade then dig in and although Devon field like they did against Berkshire, why they could not do that against Derbyshire is interesting, but it is not until the 27th over when Brad comes back on that the 4th wicket falls, Charlie Fitz taking off and catching a great catch at point- be happy! One brought two as two balls later Brad takes his fourth wicket LBW; 81-5. Pyler then takes another wicket 84-6. Did we relax from then on or did Gloucestershire bat well, actually Pierre did bat well but we didn’t take the next wicket until the 38th over when Greener bowling his off spin gets Hopkins out caught Thomo for a very good 64. An end is now open and Shahzad looks fragile but we must get him on strike. Jake does get him out caught Goodey at short mid but by now the overs have ticked away and Gloucestershire have somehow reach the 66% they need for a losing draw and finish on 181-8. Devon a winning draw.

An excellent performance, frankly nothing to be disappointed with - we played some great cricket put perhaps one or two bowlers need to join the party and we need to run better and be more positive batting!

Devon
265-6. Steer 74. Green 67. Thompson 44NO. Partnerships: 2nd 62 Codd/ Steer. 3rd 83 Steer/ Green. 45 5th Green/ Thompson. Last 9 overs 97 runs! Gloucestershire 181-8. B Causey 8.2.28.4. D Pyle 6.2.21.2.

Day 3 Yorkshire Wednesday 25th July Pitch 1

Another hot day - heavy dew. The warm up went well. Doughnuts and apples and more squash. We won the toss and put Yorkshire in. After yesterday Dan Pyle and Brad Causey opened the bowling but Yorkshire were more disciplined and after 6 overs it was all change with Greener coming on and trying to bowl pace but slipping second ball and hurting his back again and Dan Goodey trying his luck up the hill. Not until the 12th over with the score on 48 did a wicket fall when Jake Reddick took a sharp chance at square leg off Steery. Unlike yesterday though wickets did not fall in clusters and Yorkshire progressed until the 19th over when Toby Codd got the first of his 2 wickets having Barnes caught on the boundary by Dan Goodey. Devon’s fielding was much improved but there was the odd blemish/ dropped catch - would they come back to haunt us-yep? In the 28th over Reddick who had bowled better had Malik stumped by Jamie Telford who was again outstanding behind the stumps - no byes. 115-3. Shortly after Codd takes his second wicket 124-4 off 31 overs. All the time Imtiaz was accumulating runs and with Goldthorpe they put on 49 before he is bowled in the 49th over for 87. Logan then blasts 18 off 8 balls to take Yorkshire to 258-5.

Devon get off to a disastrous start when Toby Codd is bowled and in the 7th over Steery is also bowled by Goldthorpe. 7-2. Ben Green and Dan Pyle recover the situation and are just getting used to the bowling when Pyle is run out - poor cricket lads! Charlie Barriball and Green put on 27 when Green is adjudged to have nicked one behind, actually off his arm and is out for 31. Barriball and Charlie FitzRoy then put on 23 before Barriball gets "bored" and is caught! FitzRoy’s first two scoring shots beautiful timed back foot drives for 4 show his potential as a batter. There then follows the partnership of Devon’s innings between Fitz and Will Thompson. Together they put on 86 in 15 overs with some fantastic shots from Thomson, which carried on from where he left off against Gloucestershire, one memorable on drive 6 and and even better one over extra cover.  FitzRoy is then yorked for 35 which is followed by the slowest trudge back to the pavilion of the week, desperately disappointed to have got out and not scores his first County 50. It will come. Jamie Telford is then bowled, the losing draw total is achieve with Wompy still whacking it through the covers in the last over and with Jake Reddick 6 NO they take Devon to a respectable 188-7 and a losing draw.

Yorkshire 258-5. T Codd 10.1.37.2. Devon 188-7. Green 31. C FitzRoy 35. W Thompson 70 NO. Partnerships: 86 6th FitzRoy/ Thompson.

Scorecard

At 5.45 players have the privilege of bowling to Josh Buttler; Coddy picked for Devon and they are tonked all over the Kings playing fields with balls hitting the science lab roof and trees beyond. Coddy- you did bowl him though!

Day 4 Worcestershire Thursday 26th July Pitch 1

The players are beginning to show signs of expected fatigue. Freddie to keep wicket to give JT a rest. The warm up is undertaken in the normal heavy dew. We win the toss and put Worcestershire in as they had chased well all week. The opening bowlers are changed and it doesn’t work, 16 off 2 with 9 extras which becomes 34 off 7 when the bowling is changed and Brad Causey comes on. Third ball he has Bullock caught in the slips by Greener and fifth ball the dangerous Zen Malik LBW - jubilation! Don’t get carried away and relax. A small partnership develops before Jake Reddick takes a smart caught and bowled with his first delivery, Worcester 70-3 off 18, we had fought back. Howeer Dell and Twohig then put on 96 in 20 overs to give Worcester a real base to push on from- helped by a number of dropped chances once again, most of which were fairly straight forward at this level and expected to be taken, if players are alert! Dan Goodey who bowled well before and after lunch, has Twohig well caught by Thomo, 169-4 off 38 and in the 48th over he bowls Dell for 106. Steery then throws down the stumps after a sharp stop at mid wicket and Worcetsershire end up 231-6 off their 50 overs - quite gettable if Devon bat to potential.

Unfortunately Worcester bowl straight and Devon have another slow start; Dan Pyle out bowled, yorked in the fourth over and in the
eleventh over Steery caught playing a shot on the walk. 21-2. Not great. Ben Green once more untroubled and Charlie FitzRoy start to recover the situation when Charles miss times and is caught and bowled, 46-3 off 25.  Jamie Telford and Green then put on 53 in 13 overs until
JT is LBW 23 in the 38th over, 117-5. Whilst Jamie batted well, probably given his innings the day before Thomo should have gone in at 5 – Nick and I will put our hands up and accept that! Will doesn’t really get going and is caught, frustrated out, and the innings peters out after Freddie and Jake are out cheaply with Dan Wolf looking solid at the end and with Greener ending up 65 NO - Devon 157- 9 – a losing draw.

Worcestershire 231-6. D Goodey 10.1.45.2. B Causey 6.0.21.2. Devon 157-8. Green 65 NO. Partnerships: 53 5th Green/Telford.

Day 5 Dorset Friday 27th July moved to Pitch 5

After pizza and chips following the night before BBQ, Devon are still unbeaten but tiredness is definitively taking its toll in the warm up but Dorset do not look and are not any different. We are playing 45 overs a side to try and finish early. The lads want to bat and Toby wins the toss. Freddie opens for the second time in the week with Steery and with the score on 27 in the 9th over Steery is caught again playing on the walk. Jake promoted then plays at a wide ball, first ball and is caught behind 27-2 - just what we do not need. Dan Wolf plays nice and straight but he is then out in the 17th over, 42-3. Will Thompson joins Greener and the score accelerates Thomo hitting a huge 6 but he then plays over a ball and is bowled 71-4 off 24, a slightly better run rate but given we have altered our batting order to give others a chance some of the hitters have already gone! Charlie Barriball and Green take it on to 119, partnership 61, when Barriball is caught in the 39th over in the 1st over after lunch. 180-6. Greener is by now approaching his chanceless maiden County hundred, 97 NO at lunch and the nerves are jangling, especially on the boundary when he plays and misses. Dan Pyle is then caught having a whack and Brad Causey bowled as Coddy and JT drop down the order. Greener reaches the milestone, another fantastic knock and a brilliant week’s batting, but shortly after is run out going for a quick single for 105 and Devon end up 228-9 off their 45 overs; 20 runs at least short and not a great post lunch session? Just not what was needed either giving the impetus to Dorset.

For once Brad struggles with his first and Coddy takes him off and in the 3rd over Steery strikes twice with consecutive deliveries Dorset 7-2;  the first wicket a stunning reflex catch by Jake Reddick at short extra cover. As a result did we get carried away or did Dorset bat well but the next wicket did not fall until the 30th over with Caldwell and Hendy taking Dorset’s total onto 136 and Devon having dropped more, what turned out to be, vital catches! Skiers and boundary catches seem to be the problem. Freddie Filor then takes the second stunning catch, this time the catch of the match at mid wicket diving and one handed catching Hendy off Reddick’s third ball. Will it be a match changer? Owens joins Will Caldwell and together they take the score onto 212 in the 42nd over when Steer grabs the ball and first ball has Owens caught by Pyle who then next ball runs out Morris with a direct hit from the boundary – 213-5. Will panic set in? No is the answer as the outstanding Caldwell with Clutterbuck, who decides to just chance his arm and finish it, see Dorset home to an excellent win in the 44th over. Devon lose by 5 wickets.

Devon 228-9. Green 105. Partnerships: 48 5th Green/ Thompson. 61 6th Green/ Barriball. Dorset 229- 5. Steer 7.4.2.37.3

Scorecard

Ben Green 365 runs in the week at an average 91.25

We are too late for the Presentation, Dorset did bowl their overs very slowly; all in all a very disappointing end to what had been a great week at the Taunton Festival, the last Taunton Festival for this particular group. A very pleasant meal on the way home, thank you parents, it was much appreciated. Thank you to the lads for behaving and to Wendy for putting up with them and for scoring and thank you to all the parents and relatives for their support. And finally thank you to Malcolm, Ted, Ian and all the umpires, the Kings Taunton canteen and other staff and Dennis Breakwell and his team for the pitches which were excellent given the summer weather.
