2012 Devon NatWest OCSA Finalists

Behind the Scenes - Alan Swift

Throughout Alan’s time with the Devon Cricket Board he has always put others before himself, especially young players and their needs. As a coach educator and a county manager he has always worked with young players and coaches and gained their unconditional respect. As you would expect of a volunteer like Alan, he asks for no credit and continues to work in a very unassuming way to the benefit of young people. A true ‘behind the scenes’ volunteer deserving of recognition.

Young Volunteer - Harry Solomon

Harry has contributed a great deal to Ivybridge CC despite his age. His primary role over the last 12 months has been as coach and manager of our Under 11s Eagles side (effectively the Under 10s). For someone of his age his administration of the side has been good and he relates well to the youngsters he is coaching. He has challenged all the clubs coaches and managers to review their coaching plans and has worked well with Andy Johnson (our other Under 11s side manager) in developing and executing a coaching programme both over last winter and this summer.

Officials - Pete Bamber

Firstly, the DACO Appointer, Pete Bamber - he took over at a time when his predecessor was very ill, when DACO decided to bring Who’s The Umpire online and when DACO also wanted to revise much of the way its affairs were managed. Added to which, we believe we need to get younger people involved in the administration of umpiring and whilst Pete is not that young, he has a certain bounce and enthusiasm and relish for doing what he does.

Lifetime Achiever - Joe Clowes

Joe played a full part in Devon Cricket and ensured that the Devon Cricket League worked in harmony with the DCB and other partners.

On his departure Matt Theedom, the CDM for the Devon Cricket Board, said

“Joe has had profound impact on Devon League cricket in his time at the helm, dealing with ECB and UK Borders agency legislation as well as seeing through the new Premier Division rule changes.

“These have taken up a considerable amount of his time and energy. In the time Joe has been the DCL chair he has given them clear direction and leadership.

“He will be missed on the Devon Cricket Board and we thank him for his selfless commitment to Devon cricket over the past few years and wish him well.”

Leagues and Boards - David Howe

David has been Secretary for the South Devon League for many, many years. Since the Result secretaries post has not been filled he has in effect been running the league single handedly. Acting as secretary, results secretary and handbook editor all on his own in the absence of any other volunteers. Quite remarkable when he is not a member of any of the competing clubs or have any children involved. He is a busy town councillor but carries his SDL role selflessly.

He works exceptionally hard on any ideas to improve and promote the league, sending emails to keep those involved up to date.

Without David driving this friendly and social, but competitive league, I am sure it wouldn’t have been such a well structured and organised league.

Building Partnerships - Jerry & Janine Caley

Plymouth Cricket Club have had a horrendous few years since they were told they had to vacate their previous ground at Peverell Park. Since the news was broken over 6 years ago Jerry and a small team from the club have dedicated their time and energy into ensuring their club has a future.

Jerry’s drive, determination and love for his club have ensured he has been able to secure the club's future. The evidence of this can be clearly seen at their new home when you see the modern new clubhouse and pitch at Mount Wise.

They say that behind every good man is a great women and Jerry’s wife is no exception to that rule! Janine has been as inspirational at the club and as motivated as Jerry to succeed. Both deserve this recognition, as without them I do not think Plymouth Cricket Club would still exist!

Congratulations go to all the finalists and also all those nominated by clubs for their dedication as volunteers within the county.
