Alphington open up three-point lead + Murphy hits ton

Alphington have opened up a three-point lead at the top of Division Two of the Island Cricket Exeter T20 league after a comfortable victory at home to Exeter Colts.

The youngsters batted first and posted 137-9 from their 20 overs, Henry Thompson top scoring with 47, supported by Sam Reddick (33) and Tom Richardson (25). James Knight took 4-23 for the Alphas.

The home side’s Ben Ireson then made light work of the chase – scoring 72 not out as Alphington cruised home with three overs to spare, despite two wickets for Joe Fanous.

Topsham St James remain in second place despite defeat at Exwick.

Topsham scored 165-8 from 20 overs, with runs for Rob Harper (43), opener Mark Jordan (39) and Charlie Penn (36).

Exwick’s Vic Murphy then hit the best individual score in the league this season, finishing with a superb 103 not out as the home side nicked it with a single ball to spare.

Rob Harper was the pick of the Topsham bowling with 4-33.

Cullompton moved into third place despite not playing, as the Met Office were unable to raise a side and conceded the fixture.

Countess Wear proved too strong at home for Newton St Cyres, the visitors finishing on 91-9 with Wear’s generous helping of 23 extras their top score!

The home side then took ten overs to knock off the required runs, opener Mark Davey leading the way with 50 not out.
