Things can only get better

Heathcoat and two excellent umpires somehow ensured the game between the Devon sixteens and fifteens in awful weather conditions was nearly completed. Felicity Maunder provided an amazing tea and the fifteens will be more encouraged than the sixteens as they powered to a win on run rate. The omnipresent dark cloud finally made it impossible for the fielders to see the ball to the audible annoyance of the younger side. It was very dark and the umpires were 100% right to make the decision. As a run out for both sides much will have been learnt with Harry Choules, fresh from his maiden century the previous day, the only sixteen who could be totally pleased with his performance. Whereas Dan Powell and Matt Skeemer alerted the sixteens management to their potential and some future cricket at the older age group. Sam Wyatt-Haines won the toss and batted first, Ollie Higgs looked in prime form but was caught at slip with Devon on 41. The captain added nineteen with Choules when he caught and bowled working to leg. Billy Searle was well caught behind by Jack Maunder off Skeemer and the sixteens were in some difficulty at 73-3. Ant's partner Declan Lines now added 65 with Choules, the sixteens best partnership of the day but it ended in the thirty-third over. Maxwell chanced his arm 144-5 and Choules finally succumbed in the forty-first over for an outstanding one hundred and nine ball 65. He was bowled twice by Thomas, the first a no ball and the second counted. He may well have been tired after his exploits the previous day but he will soon learn that two day cricket requires a high level of fitness. He should have scored his second ton of the weekend and in a few years time will be disappointed! Bess, Ansell and Singh added thirty-nine and Devon were 50 short. It transpired they were probably eighty short as Skeemer and Hoddonott put on an undefeated 148 in only 27 overs. Skeemer continued his outstanding 2012 form with a seventy-two ball 83 - a top innings. It is hoped we will see more of Matthew in the summer but on our side. The officials - Daniels, Piddock, Lane and Ansley were outstanding, the Maunder tea special and the hosts Heathcoat - brilliant. Things can only get better!
