Tavvy puling away at top

TAVISTOCK took a major step towards promotion as B Division champions when they beat chasers Bideford by five wickets.

Tavvy skipper Shaun Daymond took five wickets for 39 runs as Bideford were limited to 165 for nine. Jamie Stephens had three for 33.

Dominic Scaglioni then top scored for Tavvy with 56 as the Moorlanders knocked off the runs with more than 10 overs to spare.

Bideford, who were second, have dropped down to third, 27 points behind the leaders.

Thorverton are now on second place, 26 points behind Tavvy, after they dealt a blow to Ivybridge’s promotion hopes.

For Daymond, it was a job well done.

“We were well prepared and performed in all areas,” said Daymond.

“Our plan was to put them in and restrict them to as low a total as possible.

“We like to chase on our ground so 166 was a good score to chase.”

Daymond took the first four wickets to fall as Bideford tried to up the tempo after a slow start.

Theo Peter and Lee Baker proved hard to get away and when openers Jake Roach (36) and James Ford (31) tried to move things along Daymond got them.

After Roach and Ford’s stand of 62 was broken, the next best from Bideford was 26 between Ford and Luxton.

Tavvy’s run chase seemed a formality while openers Scaglioni and Ian Gray (46) were putting on 77 for the first wicket.

Scaglioni’s demise at 125 for three signaled a mini collapse that saw two more wickets go for just one run added.

Any thoughts of a Tavistock collapse were dispelled by Stephens (15no) and Aaron Churchill (23no), who put on 40 unbroken to win the match.

“We didn’t turn up on Saturday and were beaten by a better team,” said Bideford skipper Ford.

“Tavistock didn’t give us anything early on thenwe lost wickets against their spinners trying to force things along.

“After Tavistock got off to a flier it was always going to be hard pegging them back.

“We need a massive all-round improvement if we want to play A Division cricket next season.”

Bideford will be looking to bounce back against visiting Axminster this Saturday.
