Cornwood grab share of top spot

CORNWOOD walloped Barton by 184 runs to grab a share of top spot in the A Division.

The Corns recovered from 39 for four – Ben Holmes doing most of the damage – to reach 267 for nine.

A stand of 88 for the eighth wicket between Elliot Staddon and Matt Butterworth – proved crucial.

There were four wickets each for Adam Goodliffe and Craig James as Barton were hustled out for 83 in reply.

Victory puts Cornwood level on points at the top of the table with Brixham and Budleigh Salterton.

Brixham were top in their own right before losing to Budleigh on Saturday. Now all three teams are level on 151 points.

Jackson Thompson led the Cornwood recovery from 39 for four with a run-aball 65.

Jason Hall chipped in with 19 towards a stand of 79 for the fifth wicket that turned things round for the Corns.

Spinner Stuart Bowker (3-45) got the brake on in the middle order as Cornwood slowed up to 148 for seven.

Enter Butterworth to join Staddon to take the game away from Barton.

Staddon made 57 off 46 balls and Butterworth 41 not out from 54.

None of Barton’s top four made a double figure score with James (4-30) wreaking havoc.

There was brief resistance from Shaun Needham, but when he went the wickets started tumbling again to Goodliffe (4-35).

Bowker (16) and Aqeel Ahmed (15) delayed the inevitable for as long as it took Butterworth (2-17) to winkle them out.

Nick Goodliffe, Cornwood’s cricket chairman, said there was plenty of credit to share around in the wake of the win.

Pride of place on Goodliffe’s list went t Jackson Thompson for his innings.

“Jackson’s run-a-ball, knock was a steadying influence on the team and allowed the side to build a recovery after the flurry of early wickets,” said Goodliffe.

“Elliot demonstrated his abilities coming in at number eight and, for the second time this season, showed great calmness to bat us back into contention.

“Craig James putting in his best performance of the season, with Adam Goodliffe bowling his normal tight lines from the pavilion end, meant the Barton batsmen had no respite,

“Other results have kind of worked in our favour, but with eight matches remaining it’s evident every point will be vital in the race back to the Premier Division.”
