Murphy back in charge after White exits Ottermouth

JOEL Murphy is back in charge of Budleigh Salterton following the unexpected departure of skipper Lloyd White.

Murphy stood down as captain at the end of last season after four years at the tiller.

White, who had been a successful skipper of the 2nd XI, stepped up to take the senior job and was making a pretty good fist of it.

Last Saturday’s four-wicket win over Brixham gave Budleigh a third share of top spot in the A Division with the team they beat and Cornwood.

Murphy (left) takes the team to Bradninch on Saturday – the club he was with before joining Budleigh Salterton.

White has left the club completely for personal reasons and Murphy is keen to maintain the momentum his predecessor generated.

“The last thing I expected was to be captain again, but the bonus for me is I inherit a team in a good place,” said Murphy.

“We played really well to win at Brixham and it is good to see the young blokes – Sam Fereday, Ben Phillips and Sam Richardson - making a contribution.”

SANDFORD, at home to Hatherleigh, will hope to pick up where the left off in a 54-run win over Tavistock.

Russ Discombe helped himself to 52, Prince Masvuare had 40, Josh Cann made 34 on his debut and Ash Baker chipped in with 31 as Sandford made 225 all out.

Tavvy were all out for 171 in reply – and only got that many thanks to Jamie Stephens (71) and James McGahey (31) rescuing them from 76 for seven.

There were three wickets each for Jamie Palmer (3-22) and Brian Leach (3-27).

Jamie Palmer, the Sandford skipper, said seldom had the old adage ‘catches win matches’ been more relevant.

Hatherleigh captain Mark Lake wants a turnround from the side after defeats by Bradninch and Lewdown.

“| am looking for a big reaction from every individual after two shocking performances,” said Lake.

“I have complete respect for Sandford. They have some quality players but I also know it's a game I would look to win if we perform.

“Sandford are on a good run at the moment so I expect a tough game.

“We need to get back to being tough to score runs off and be disciplined with both bat and ball.”

Jack Cherrington and Charlie Nielsen are both away. Rob Cockwill and Simon Gillespie come in, Gillespie for his first game of the season.

TAVISTOCK go to joint leaders Brixham with some more oomph in their batting

Ian Gray and Dave Ball are both back this week after missing the defeat by Sandford.

Elsewhere in the A Division, Barton are at home to bottom side Bideford and Lewdown entertain Cornwood.
