Glamorgan come in for young quickie Szymanski

TORQUAY’S young fast-bowling all-rounder Kazi Szymanski has been snapped up on Academy terms by Glamorgan.

Szymanski, who was 16 in September, started his cricket career with Chelston, where brother Wojciech and uncle Mike Burdett are former 1st XI captains.

He has played through the age groups for Devon and his talent with bat and ball earned him an 11-plus scholarship at Kings College, Taunton.

Szymanski joined Torquay for the 2015 season and was a regular in the side that won the Premier Division in August.

His performances for club, school and county earned a place in the West side for the Bunbury Festival in late July – a known shop window for youngsters looking to break into the First Class game.

Szymanski was bowler of the tournament with seven wickets at less than 10 runs each, which caught the eye of the Glamorgan talent spotters.

Devon team-mate Tom Lammonby was batter of the tournament and has taken up and Academy package with Somerset on the strength of it.

Szymanski will continue to play for Devon and Torquay around his Glamorgan commitments.

Kazi will be attending regular sessions in Cardiff with a view to playing some 2nd XI games for Glamorgan next summer.

Torquay will hope Szymanski’s handlers at Glamorgan allow him to play league cricket on Saturdays, although that is by no means a certainty.

They have already lost opening bowler Ryan Stevenson on a two-year deal to Hampshire and early-order batsman Matt Thompson, who has joined St Fagans in Cardiff.

Losing Szymanski on a regular basis is something Torquay can do without.

However, Torquay skipper Justin Yau has been talking to some potential recruits since the season ended with a view to strengthening the squad.

Among Yau’s targets are a left-arm seam bowler with Minor County experience, an early-order batter currently playing in the West of England Premier League and a keeper-batter from the Midlands.
