Exeter beat Paignton to creep out of bottom two

PAIGNTON slipped into the Premier Division bottom two when they suffered a seven-wicket defeat at Queens Park in the basement battle with Exeter.

Victory took Exeter out of the bottom two at Paignton’s expense, but not by a massive margin.

While Plympton look doomed – their defeat by Bovey Tracey leaves them 59 points adrift with 120 to play for – there is only a point between Paignton (119), Plymouth (119) and Exeter (120).

Even Exmouth on 144 points can’t feel safe, especially as they have only once in the last four starts.

Exeter rocked up at Queens Park with Somerset firepower on board and it proved decisive to the outcome.

Ben Green, Devon’s England U19 all-rounder who is in the Somerset Academy, followed his six-wicket haul against Torquay last week with three for 18 off 10 overs as Paignton were bowled out for 138.

Ollie Sale, the former Tavistock youngster now with Exeter and Somerset 2nd XI regular this season, had three more wickets for 30 runs.

Dom Bess, the Exeter off-spinner on Somerset’s radar, took two more wickets.

In fact the first eight wickets to fall went to players with Somerset connections – and three were caught behind by Alex Barrow, currently out of favour in the 1st XI at Taunton.

Runs had to be chiselled out where they could be found, Noah Wright made 28, skipper Connor Bryan 22 and George Yates had 22 at the end before he was last man out.

Exeter’s reply hardly started well with Rob Holman and Lorenzo Machado out by the time the score reached 21.

Barrow went in at three and batted through for an undefeated 86 off 69 balls with nine fours and three sixes to anchor the rest of the chase.

Green was in and out for nine – that was 53 for three – but Barrow and skipper Miles Lenygon (26no) put on 86 unbroken to win the game with more than 22 overs to spare.
