Acton at it again for Bradninch

ROSS Acton did it again as Bradninch moved up to fourth in the A Division table after beating Tavistock by 110 runs.

All-rounder Acton destroyed Budleigh seven days earlier with a century and a hat-trick in the same match, and he was up to his tricks again at Tavistock.

Acton and skipper Dan Hardy put on 186 for the second wicket – Hardy 114, Acton 109 – in a grand total of 384 for four. Luandre van Wyk chipped in with 47 not out.

The last 10 overs saw rampant Bradninch add 108 runs as the Tavvy bowlers toiled in vain.

Jamie Stephens (2-44) was the pick of the bowlers. Shaun Daymond, Jay Stevens and Chris Hutchings managed to stay below seven an over, which was a bit of a struggle for the rest.

Tavistock replied with 238 for nine with Acton taking four for 33 and Charlie Walker three for 23.

Tavistock strung together some respectable partnerships, the being 71 to open between Dave Ball (38) and Dom Scaglioni (27), but were unable to keep up with an asking rate of seven an over.

Daymond (40) and Josh Stephens (25no) at least earned Tavvy maximum batting bonus points.

“It was a good one to win considering we lost the toss and were put in on a pretty dead wicket,” said skipper Dan Hardy.

“Ross again played an incredible innings, he's showing his class with bat and ball.

“We are starting to really hit form with the bat as a team and always good to score 300-plus..

“With the ball, it was a flat pitch not offering a lot so we did well to get nine wickets. It was a shame we didn't get the full 10.”

Tavistock are out of the A Division bottom two despite being hammered by 110 runs by Bradninch.

For local rivals Lewdown fared even worse against Bradninch and Tavistock’s bonus-point tally took them out of the basement,

However, with only three points between the sides, the roles could be reversed again this weekend, when Tavvy face Hatherleigh and Lewdown entertain leaders Brixham.

Shaun Daymond, the Tavistock skipper, knows his side are fighting for survival after promotion last season and says they have to be smart about how they go about it.

“When we play the teams around us – Hatherleigh, Lewdown, Bideford and Barton -  we have to try to win as many as possible,” said Daymond.

“Realistically, we have to be looking at sevens and eights against the likes of Budleigh and Cornwood near the top – anything more will be a bonus.”
