HIGHLY-rated Devon youngster Tom Lammonby will be joining the Somerset Academy in the autumn, writes Richard Walsh

The 15-year-old has grown up through the Devon youth system and has been playing two years ahead of his age group.

Exeter CC have been selecting Tom in their Premier Division 1st XI, when his commitments at Exeter School don’t get in the way.

He went to the 2014 Bunbury Festival a year under age – the shop window for future professional players – and has been invited back again.

This year’s Festival started today (Monday) at Malvern College and Tom stopped off en-route to sign his Academy contract, accompanied by dad Glenn and mum Jill.

“Tom has been playing cricket ever since he was really young so it was a very proud day for us to see him signing up to join the Somerset Academy,” said dad Glenn, who skippered Exeter for seven seasons.

Lammonby junior hopes he can still play for Devon in age-group cricket while part of the Academy at Taunton.

He added: “It’s a great opportunity for me to have the chance to be involved with the Academy and to work with the coaches at Somerset and make use of their facilities.

Tom has been in and around the Somerset 2nd XI set up this season, either as a 12th man or player.

“It has been a really good experience for me,” said Tom. “We won the game I played in, although I didn’t get to do too much."

Steve Snell, the director of the Somerset Academy, said: “Tom has impressed me as a player and as a character in the short time I have known him.

“He has had an impressive year with the bat and is somebody I am extremely excited to be welcoming on to our Academy programme.

“When Tom made his 2nd XI debut he looked as though he belonged in a professional environment. I have every confidence he has the right skills and attitude to progress further in the game.”

Tom made an encouraging start to the Bunbury Festival, hitting 55 for the South and West XI in their innings win over the North at Malvern.
