Torquay and Sidmouth clash in Premier match of the day

SIDMOUTH will strengthen their chances of retaining the Premier Division title by winning at Torquay on Saturday.

Last Saturday’s round of results left it pretty well a two-horse race at the top of the table with Torquay ahead by 12 points from defending champions Sidmouth with five games and a hundred points to go.

If Sidmouth win on Saturday they may just get ahead of Torquay by a point, which will leave all to play for in the last month of the campaign.

A Torquay win will leave Sidmouth playing catch-up, and relying on other teams doing them a favour.

Will Murray, the Sidmouth skipper, won’t call the game make or break, but agrees there is a lot riding on it.

“Were we to lose at Torquay it would not cost us the Premier title, but would make it harder for us to retain it,” said Murray.

“Torquay have done superbly well this season and have impressed everyone so far. They have beaten North Devon twice, which is an achievement in itself.

“We beat them the first time we played so we know it can be done, although they have a few new faces since then.

“It is worth remembering Torquay still have Paignton, Exmouth and Bovey Tracey to play after us, none of which will be easy for them.

“We will go there to play positive cricket and hope that works for us.”

Torquay skipper Justin Yau hasn’t forgotten the outcome the last time the sides met and that will motivate his men.

“We underperformed last time out against Sidmouth and we are sure it will be a closer encounter this time round,” he said.

“We've played some really good cricket in recent weeks, have been positive and have produced some brilliant results.

“We are just pleased to be competing with the best teams in Devon with our young side and we will give it our all.”

Joe Crooks did well against North Devon last week and keeps his place in an unchanged side.
