Mbofana breaks Devon League batting record with 264 not out

KENTISBEARE cricketer Mark Mbofana smashed the oldest record in the Devon Cricket League when he blasted 264 not out in a second team game against North Devon.

Mbofana (left) butchered the bowling in the C Division East game at Rectory Park as Kentisbeare accumulated 382 for two.

Along the way the Zimbabwean big hitter shared in stands of 86 for the first wicket with Chris Gillett (53) and 147 with Sid Lunn.

North Devon were all out for 236 in reply – Mbofana taking three wickets to add to his record-breaking knock.

Clyst St George batsman Bob Merrifield, a former league chairman, set the competition record of 255 against Cornwood in 1984.

The nearest anyone has got to breaking the record was Chris Palfrey’s 237 for Whimple against Plymouth Civil Service in 2009.

Gillett, who was skippering the side in the absence of Tom Martin, said he has never seen hitting like it.

“Everyone knows our ground isn’t the biggest, but Mark was clearing the boundaries by a distance,” he said.

“It was an exhibition of clean hitting by a very talented player.

“Our only worry was we would run out of balls, but we found enough to carry on.”

Along the way Mbofona broke his own career-best score – 180 for the Harare Sports Club – and two Kentisbeare club records.

Scott Chappell’s 191 against touring side Worthing Foresters in 2013 was Kents’ all-time record.

Steve Reed’s 177 against Stoke Gabriel in 2006 was the best score made in a league game by a clubman.

Mbofana started the season with Kentisbeare’s C Division East rivals Filleigh, but left around about halfway through for personal reasons.

As a Category Three overseas player – at home he plays First Class cricket for Mid-West Rhinos – league rules allow a transfer but prohibited Mbofana playing in another 1st XI.

A spokesman for North Devon CC said they would be writing to the league executive about the rule, which they felt turned their game into a one-man show rather than a contest.
