Runs and wickets for Zhuwao on Budleigh debut

CEPHAS Zhuwao made an instant impact for Budleigh Salterton on his debut appearance in the 23-run win over Barton.

The Zimbabwean all-rounder, whose arrival in the UK was delayed by visa issues, goes by the nickname of ‘Big Bully’ for his run-scoring exploits.,

And Barton found out why as the powerful left hander clattered 88 off 79 balls in a Budleigh total of 221 all out.

Hard-hitting it might have been, but slogging it wasn’t. Zhuwao hit seven sixes and six fours – that’s 66 out of his 88 in boundaries – which suggests he waited for the bad ball to come along at dealt with it.

Opener Rob Craze made a leisurely 44 off 67 balls with six boundaries and shared  a stand of 51 with Zhuwao.

By the time Zhuwao fell to Adam Parker (2-47) he had time to add another 56 with Harry Parkin, whose contribution to the stand was five.

Parkin went on to make 21 and there was a bright and breezy 16 for Andy Procter at nine before Budleigh were all out.

Aqeel Ahmed (0-23) bowled the cheapest 10-over spell without any success.

There were two wickets each for Mark Gilmour, Stuart Bowker and Adam Parker.

Barton must have spent the past few days wondering where it went wrong after reaing 107 for two in reply with nearly 30 overs to go.

The game got away from Barton in the time it took them to slip from 147 for three to 169 for six and on to 175 for eight.

Openers Shaun Needham (94) and Will Grainger (39) got Barton off to an 83-run start and Needham kept going as the senior partner almost to the end.

Zhuwao bowls as well as bats and, after removing Grainger, he took three more wickets to finish  with four for 33. Not a bad day’s work at all.

Procter (3-30) got into the middle order as well, leaving Needham running out of partners.

Needham and Bowker had one last go in a ninth-wicket stand of 21 that got the target down to 24.

Joe Gore (2-51) bowled Needham and in his next over did the same to Ben Holmes as Barton were all out for 198.
