CHERITON Fitzpaine have launched an immediate recruiting drive after being forced to cancel their Devon League D Division East game against Tiverton owing to a shortage of players.

The Cherries joined the Devon League in 2010 and were running a 1st and 2nd XI until 2012.

Last Saturday there were not enough players available to get one side out and the game against Tiverton was conceded,

Mike Foan, the club’s fixture secretary, said the last two seasons have been tough for the club.

“Unfortunately, over the last two seasons we have lost too many players,” said Foan.

“Or group of 16 to 17 year old have all gone to university, are working on Saturdays or do not want to play long weekend matches,

“Three more players have retired and four have moved away to find work.

“We have to build up our numbers again.”

Foan said Cheriton have lots to offer cricketers, however they like to play the game.

“If you are under 60, have not played much since school, stopped playing due to a

young family yoy can join a genuine village team, who enjoy and play cricket for all to be involved!

“We can offer a 20-over evening match every week, mid-week afternoon matches against fun touring teams, Saturday afternoon league games for the more competitive players and Sunday 40-over games against other village teams – with a traditional cream tea.”

Foan can be contacted on (01363) 866218 by any prospective players. Alternatively, take a look at the club website www.cf-cc.co.uk.

Foan will be running coaching sessions every Tuesday at the Hayne Farm home of the club every Tuesday from June 16 (6pm).

“Current and new players welcome - just come along and turn your arm over,” said Foan.
