Bideford skipper wears brave face after 215-run defeat

BIDEFORD captain James Ford was wearing his bravest face after the 215-run defeat away to A Division leaders Brixham.

Bideford have been having a torrid time in the A Division this season following promotion, so dismissing Brixham skipper Andy Pugh in the first over and Josh Hunt soon after would have given them a lift.

Josh Atkinson picked up both wickets to fall.

Third-wicket pair Matt McGillivray and Stuart Edgar then put on 192 for the third wicket, taking Brixham to 219 with 20 overs to go.

Tom Brend had McGillivray caught for 96, breaking the stand, but Brixham carried on in much the same vain with Mark Orchard and Edgar adding a brisk 36.

Edgar’s time ran out on 255 when Brend got him out for 133. Edgar faced 111 balls and hit 14 of them for four and four for six.

Orchard made 31 and Craig Eaves a rapid 31 before the overs expired with Brixham on 351 all out.

Bowling wise it was hard going for Bideford. Paul Heard (0-38) was the most economical but didn’t take a wicket.

Atkinson, Brend and Dan Barratt had two wickets each.

Bideford were all out for 136 with no one making more than opener Barratt (39).

Skipper Ford was ninth man out for 37, which came off 70 balls.

Atkinson with 25 was the only other Biddy batter in double figures.

There were two wickets each for McGillivray, Rhys Dallow and Gary Spencer. Edgar sneaked on at the end and took the last three wickets for nine runs.

Skipper Ford said there were positives to take from the game and he isn’t despondent by results.

“Missing four players didn’t help as even at our strongest it would have been difficult to get a result against Brixham,” said Ford.

“The positives were good spells from left-arm spinners Martin Stewart and 16 year old Tom Brend - and the return of Fred King, even though not fully ft.

“We will continue to play competitive cricket, enjoy ourselves and make sure we don’t let out club down on the field.”

Bideford play away to Sandford this Saturday.
