Letheren and Jelly send Barton tumbling to defeat

HATHERLEIGH’S bowlers made the Barton middle order do a vanishing act worthy of Paul Daniels in his prime en-route to a 74-run win over the Torquay side.

Hatherleigh made 253 for eight in their 50 overs – Gareth Tidball top scoring with 63 – the bowled Barton out for 179.

Barton’s running total of 49 for two in the 17th over hinted at a battle to catch-up with the run rate. But they didn’t get close.

Four wickets went for 17 runs added – three of them on 66 –and that was the end of Barton’s prospects.

A stand of 73 between Tom Drake (42) and Alex Hunt (29) at least made the scoreline respectable and earned a handful of batting bonus points

“It was a win that was fully deserved,” said skipper Mark Lake.

“A real team effort with everyone contributing and it's good that each week different people are stepping up and making match winning contributions.

“As for the rest of the season it's a case for me of win as many games as possible and look up the table rather than down and see where we end up.”

Hatherleigh batted effectively in partnerships with Tidball featuring in three of the four that mattered.

There was early success for Barton when Tom Porter removed Danny Forrester, but surviving opener Tidball didn’t leave until the score had reached 137 for five.

Along the way Tidball put on 44 with Chris Jelley (16), 23 with veteran Andy Bennett (14) and 50 with Carl Schwarrz (16).

There was a brief lull as Rob Cockwill came and went to Kyle Lardner (2-23), then the runs started coming again.

Jack Cherrington (48) and Rhys Davies (33) totted up 67 and there was a quick 35 from 21 balls for skipper Mark Lake.

Barton were undone at the top by Steve Letheren (3-34) and  pinned in the middle order by  Jelley (4-45).

Drake (54) and Hunt (29) showed some fighting spirit taking the tally from 66 for six to 139 for seven.

Drake was spun out by Lake (2-26) who wound up the game by dispatching Drake, who was last man out.

Hatherleigh go to Bradninch this Saturday.
