Bradninch move into mid-table

LUANDRE Van Wyk and Ross Acton played key roles for Bradninch as they edged towards the A Division mid-table with an eight-wicket win over Hatherleigh.

Van Wyk took four for 18 from 10 overs, and there were two wickets for Acton, as Hatherleigh were rolled out for 121.

Acton’s unbeaten 89 all-but won the game, although he did have some assistance from Chris Metters (15) and skipper Dan Hardy (11no).

Victory lifts Bradninch to sixth in the table ahead of this Saturday’s trip to bottom side Bideford.

“We bowled well and took all of our catches, which helped,” said Hardy.

“Then we were positive with the bat.

“Overall, a good performance from the team.”

Acton and Van Wyk had Hatherleigh in all sorts of trouble at 34 for five in the 17th over.

Carl Schwarz dug in for 40 while wickets were falling and it needed a Metters run-out to remove him.

Andy Collier chipped in with 16 – he and Schwarz put on 38 – and tail enders Rob Fishleigh (15no) and Charlie Nielson (15) put on 28 at the end.

Metters and Acton got Bradninch away to a 51-run start. The only other wicket to fall was Andy Buzza, who went for five at 69 for two.

Hardy (11no) kept a tidy end while Acton got on with it at the other.

Mark Lake, the Hatherleigh captain, said he hoped the result would be a timely kick up the backside

“It was just an all round bad day - we didn't turn up at all,” said Lake.

“A game we need to forget and put it right quickly this week end!

“More performances like that and we put pressure on ourselves in terms of being dragged into relegation.

“There is definitely one relegation spot that has anyone's name on it.”
