Heathcoat safe but worrying goes on for Paignton

HEATHCOAT can look forward to Premier cricket next season after beating Paignton by six wickets to banish the threat of relegation once and for all.

Going into the latest round of matches, second-bottom Paignton could still get past Heathcoat if they won at Knightshayes.

Paignton can still get past Plymouth, but Heathcoat are now 42 point clear of the drop zone with only 40 to play for..

Dan Wolf marked his Devon call-up with 61 and Rob Shergold weighed in with 31 towards a below-par total of 119 all out.

Peter Taylor made 12 opening the innings, last man Stephen George was three not out and the remaining seven batsmen didn’t manage a run between them.

Two were out first ball, two were out third ball and one managed two balls.

The bowling carnage was led by Jamie Drew, whose figures of five for four from nine overs – seven of them maidens – need no further explanation.

Paul Elliot, had four for 24 in two spells and the odd one out went to Brad Barnes, who had Shergold caught behind.

Heathcoat openers Barnes (31) and Toby Lochead (40) made a 49-run dent in the deficit

George Yates (4-41) broke the stand and later added both Smith brothers to his portfolio in the same over.

By then the target was down to 36 to win and Heathcoat were on course.

Lochead was the last man out on 98, which let Dylan Penberthy (22no) and Dinesh Raheja to finish the job.

“It was a brilliant win to secure Premier Division cricket next year,” said vice-captain Lochead.

“Losing the toss then bowling Paignton out for 119 was a great effort.

“Jamie Drew bowled an outstanding spell alongside Paul Elliott.

“The pressure was all on Paignton and, apart from Dan Wolf who played extremely well, they were not good enough.

“Chasing a low total you need your top three to score the majority of the runs.

“We did that, which allows us to play our final two games with no pressure on us.”
