Cost of teas set to rise for first time in 16 years

DEVON League clubs meet in Exeter on Friday night for the competition’s annual meeting and awards evening.

Torquay will officially get their hands on the Premier Division trophy they won under the leadership of skipper Justin Yau last season.

It was Torquay’s first title win for 18 years since Nigel Janes led them to successive titles in 1996 and 1997.

Fourteen rules are up for amendments or alterations during the formal part of the meeting.

Inevitably there is an element of tidying up based on living with rules and regulations during the season.

Significant changes are relatively few, although one concerning the price of teas is likely to provoke a heated debate.

Teams have been paying £33 for teas since 2001 – and Budleigh Salterton think is should be raised to £42.

The price of teas will be academic if Plymouth CC get their way: they want to scrap the tea interval and have a 15-minute break between innings.

Various clubs, Abbotskerswell, Stokeingteignhead and Sidmouth among them, want to tinker with match start times.

Sidmouth want to see fielding circles introduced in 2nd XI cricket – until now they are in 1st XI games only – and want free hits brought in for no-balls.

Exwick are behind two proposals which are bound to appeal to sides in the lower divisions.

They want a loan system brought in allowing players to float between teams playing in the 2nd XI competition only.

Another proposal from Exwick is to stop adding extra deliveries to an over for no-balls and wides – except in the final over of a game.

The batting side will be awarded two penalty runs instead of an extra ball.

Start time is 7pm at the Exeter Court Hotel at the bottom of Telegraph Hill.
