Lord's date for University cricketers

IT’S next stop Lord’s for Exeter University’s cricketers after they won a finals day place in the ECB Indoor National Club Championship.

The Students saw off last year’s Devon champions Cornwood in the county final at Derriford, then accounted for Somerset champs Bridgwater at Taunton in the regional final.

The win over Bridgwater earned the University a return trip to Taunton for the South West play-off with a place in the Lord’s final waiting for the winners.

Exeter University defeated Newport from the Isle of Wight by 45 runs in the semi-final – dismissing the Islanders for 41 in reply to their own total of 86 for four – then had to wait for St Austell and Wiltshire side Burbage & Easton Royal to settle their tie,

The second semi-final couldn’t have been much closer as Burbage & Easton Royal won by one-wicket off the final ball.

The Students won a nail-biting final by just five wins, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat in two dramatic overs.

Jack Marston hit 38 off 33 balls, and Will Harris made 19 off 14, in the University tally of 87 for four in their 12-over allocation. Harris (top) and Marston (bottom) are pictured right.

The Salisbury side set off in hot pursuit and were almost there at 77 for two with three overs to go.

Two run-outs in the 10th over, followed by two wickets in two balls in the 11th, saw Burbage & Eaton all out for 82 with an over to go.

Man of the moment for Exeter University with the two wickets in two balls was spinner Max Mainwaring.

Waiting for Exeter in the final, being played at the indoor school at Lord’s on Sunday, March 13 are Whitley Hall CC from Yorkshire.

The other semi-final sees Welsh champions Haverfordwest play Belhus from Essex.

It promises to be a busy weekend for Exeter University’s cricketers as they are through to the Super 8 stage of the BUCS indoor competition on the same day.

That competition is being played at a sports hall in East London.

South West semi-final: Exeter University 86-4 (J Marston 23, M Mainwaring 18no), Newport IoW 41 (O Mills 2-7), K Sionha 2-2).

Final: Exeter University 87-4 (J Marston 38, W Harris 33), Burbage & Easton 82 (M Mainwaring 2-1).
